You come to your senses, deciding that it's not worth it. You manage to shut the door, leaving Doe behind in her cell, alternately screaming, swearing, and crying. After you report what you found to the higher-ups, Doe is moved to higher security part of the building. She's no longer your problem.

You go on to work at the jail for many more years. Not a single day of that goes by without you wondering what might have happened, and what it might have been like.
