Chapter 22 by Defamir

Is the shades night okay?

Sleep tight until midnight.

As the moon approaches its zenith, you gently remove your wings from Rachel. The girl, suddenly cold, wakes up. She looks up at you cautiously with her blue eyes. "The twin sapphires" you decided to call them in your mind. You send to her, "We need to leave, if we stay longer the knights might wake up and they are too strong for us at the moment." She nods while standing up. You look around and touch the minds of every one of your soldiers, as well as the NPCs who wanted to come with you, and send, "Get up, we are leaving." You see them stirring, most of them a bit surprised by the voice in their heads, but it soon comes back to them. None of them, however, seem agitated most of them just get up and collect their few belongings. During the time they take to equip their gear you ponder something. Should you make Rachel their boss too, or should you just keep her as your pet. It is a difficult question, the first choice would make them pretty angry - probably - the second would risk her getting harmed later on by newcomers. In the end you decide to postpone the decision for now, the men right here would never touch her, although they sometimes look at her angrily. Thats also something you might have to fix in the future. With these thoughts you don't realize that one of the soldiers, their new leader or better spokesman approaches you. His name is Robert Burton, he is a muscular man, he has shaggy short hair. His gear consists of a short spear, a shield and a sword - like with the rest of the soldiers, also every one of them is wearing a leather armor and a morion-styled helmet.

The soldier nods towards you, not so sure how to actually greet you. You think about that yourself for a bit, but then you decide "You soldiers should call me master as well, but salute when you greet me." You like the word, it rolls off the tongue (or in your case of the mind). He does as you tell him and salutes before saying "Master, we are ready to move out. Do you have a place you want to go?" You nod and point your hand towards the mountains "There!" He salutes again and follows you as you start to leave. You don't need to look behind you to realize that your army is following you. Rachel is on your right side following you, not so close that there is even a whole step between you two. Your healer-**** is close behind but keeps a respectful distance to his master. You hear the men marching in unison, their boots clicking on the floor like they were just one boot. You grin to yourself, they might not be much, but they are a start.

After a while the sun appeard on the horizon, you see a small village approaching, it is still a few hours away and they won't see you where you are right now. So you let your host stop for a break. You yourself can barely see more than the houses and, of course, the temple of Helia. Seems only natural that in an area where the only thing that protects the people is the sun, they would build a temple to that useless bitch. Thinking of the area you look at your **** and ask her "What type of monster roams the countryside here?" She looks longingly at you before she answers "Some dire-wolves, master, a few bandit groups, a few corrupted animals - not like us, you can't eat their food that's the only thing it means- and some deserters from all types of races." You nod. You expected as much. Your next questions are the more important ones though "What races live in these villages around here and also how protected are they?" She opens up her lore-sheet before answering and says "Most of them are human, there are some elves and dwarfs, master, I think I remember reading something about a centaur village, but it's not completely clear on that, my lord. As for soldiers. Well, a lot of knights of Helia in the bigger villages, a few of other gods and, well, the same as the ones following you right now in most of the small villages, master." "Like the one over there?" You ask as the last question while pointing in the direction of the hovels. She nods and closes the lore-sheet again.

You call your men and your rangeress to a planning session. "What shall we do about the village?" you ask all of them. You yourself think of the supplies and of the new members for your army you could find down there. In the eyes of the soldiers you see the prospect of loot and ****. Rachel looks like she would accept whatever you suggest. The men tell you what you already saw in their facial expressions, they want the chance to let off some steam, maybe there will be heroes down there as well, which gives you an Idea. You open up your stat-sheet and bypass everything except one special modifier:

  • Shadowsight-Cooldown: 5 hours remaining

Enough to get to the village and enslave one of the heroes over there, if there is one there indeed. You look at the NPCs in your small host and wonder what they think of this, most of them seem a bit worried that you would decide looting. But you don't concern yourself with that too much, they will get their fair share out of it all too. You realize all of your followers are looking at you with anticipation, it's time to decide what to do with the village.

What do you decide?
