Chapter 36 by robyna
Which girl should you sit next to?
Sit with the Hispanic girl
Something about the Hispanic girl... like maybe the fact that she smiled at you... makes you determined to sit with her. You head for the back pew and slide in beside her.
Up close, she's even cuter. She blushes red when you sit with her and gives you a smile that shows off sexy dimples. She's all curvy in all the right places and looks innocent in her church dressup. You're pretty sure bending her over the pew and taking her virginity would not be considered proper behavior but the fantasy is strong... at least until you notice her father staring at you warily.
"Hi," you say to the girl.
Her dad glares at you.
"Hi." She practically whispers it.
"I haven't been here before," you say. "What kind of service do they have?"
"I guess it's pretty regular. We used to be Catholic so I'm more used to that."
You've read that fundamentalist churches are going after the Hispanic crowd partly because so many people were abandoning those churches due to their narrow-mindedness and bigotry, and partly because many Hispanics are socially conservative. So, apparently Amber had got herself swept in by a fundamentalist sect.
"Do you like it?"
"Hush, Catalina," the dad growls.
"Sorry, I can't talk."
You try a few more times but get nowhere with dad growling and glaring at you so you back off and listen to the sermon.
Normally you wouldn't be interested but the sermon is on 'Taking the Name of the Lord in vain.' The preacher goes on about swearing and living in a modern age but the research you've done on Enochian sends your thoughts into a detour. What if the 'name in vain' thing isn't about swearing at all? What if God... or the universe... can be compelled by those who know its true name? What if the Bible bans taking the name of the Lord in vain because irresponsible use of that name can be dangerous? Or perhaps just because the Bible's authors wanted to keep a monopoly on that power.
You'll definitely have to do some research on that.
The sermon ends and everyone gets up. Rather obviously the dad makes Catalina exit to the opposite aisle from where you're sitting. To your surprise, though, a young girl who'd sat on the other side of their dad stays behind and comes up to you handing you a little slip of paper. It's the church program for the day which you already have. You try to explain that to her but she giggles and says "look at it."
So you do.
Catalina's phone number is scribbled in a youthful script on the program. "Gotta run before they notice I'm not with them," the girl whispers. "I'm Lola by the way."
"Thanks, Lola."
The girl giggles. She's way too young, but still cute.
Well, who knew getting phone numbers could be so easy? You'll definitely want to call Catalina sometime. In the meantime, you'd better get out of the church before--
"What the hell are you doing here? Are you stalking me?"
Oops. Amber noticed you're here.
"Trying to discover myself," you try.
"Wow, talk about humble aspirations."
"Got to go."
"Yeah, run away, loser."
There's a lot of anger there. You're pretty sure you didn't do anything to provoke that level of rage... unless it was what you didn't do.
