She wants to go with you
You hold Alice close, feeling the warmth of her body against yours. The marijuana high courses through your veins, making you feel lightheaded and euphoric.
"That was...amazing," you say, still catching your breath.
Alice smiles coyly. "I'm glad you enjoyed it."
She takes your hand and leads you back through the bushes, out into the open courtyard. The two of you begin walking slowly, aimlessly, enjoying the feeling of freedom that comes with youth.
After a few moments, Alice turns to you. "So where are you headed after St. Louis, Jack?"
"Well, Springfield Missouri is the next big stop on Route 66. And I wonder how it compares to my hometown of Springfield Illinois. "
Alice nods. "Take me with you," she says suddenly, squeezing your hand.
You're surprised by her request but intrigued. "You really want to come along?"
"More than anything," Alice says firmly. "I want to get out of this town, see the world. Be free." Her blue eyes are full of longing.
You consider it for a moment, then grin and a spark in your eye. "Let's do it."
Alice's face lights up. She throws her arms around your neck. "Oh, thank you, Jack! This will be the adventure of a lifetime, I just know it."
You laugh, hugging her back. "I think you're right. So should head to the interstate or stick around here till tomorrow? Do you have a place we could stay?”

The Summer of Love
Hitchhiking on Route 66 in 1967
The year is 1967, the Summer of Love. This is the era of Rock & Roll. The Beatles, The Stones, The Doors, and Procol Harum are the top bands. Johnson is president. The Vietnam War is in full swing. Anti-war marches alternate with civil rights protests, often led by Martin Luther King. Gas prices are 33 cents a gallon. You are eighteen years old, you live in Springfield, Illinois, the state capital, and you're a senior in Springfield High School. You watched the television coverage of the Human Be-In in San Francisco in January. When Timothy Leary said, "Turn on, tune in, and drop out," his words resonated with you, and you decided to head to California over Spring Break.
