What happens next?
She tells Lily about it
Chloe lingered in Josh’s embrace a moment longer, her mind still swirling with the events of the day. The guilt over agreeing to pretend to be Aaron’s girlfriend had eased after Josh’s understanding reaction, but she needed to process it with someone who would truly get the absurdity of it all. As Josh pulled back with a soft kiss on her forehead, she smiled up at him. “I think I’m going to text Lily and catch up. Girl talk, you know?”
Josh nodded, his easy smile returning. “Go for it, babe. Have fun. Just don’t stay out too late if you’re meeting her.” He gave her another quick hug before she slipped out of his apartment, her heart lighter.
Later that evening, Chloe sat cross-legged on her bed, phone pressed to her ear as Lily answered on the second ring. “Chloe! Finally. I thought you were ditching me for that kid all day. Spill—what happened with the babysitting gig?”
Chloe took a deep breath, then launched into the story. She recounted the game of Candy Land, Aaron’s awkward confessions, the bullying at school, and finally, her impulsive decision to pretend to be his girlfriend for one afternoon on Friday. “I just felt so bad for him, Lil. He looked so desperate. It’s not like it’s real or anything. Just... pretending.”
There was a beat of silence on the other end, followed by Lily’s unmistakable burst of laughter. “Oh my god, Chloe. You did what? Pretend to be the girlfriend of that chubby, video-game-obsessed kid who stares at you like you’re a goddess? This is peak Chloe energy. I can already picture it—you holding his hand while he tries not to faint.”
Chloe’s cheeks flushed, but she couldn’t help giggling along. “Stop! It’s not funny. Well, okay, maybe a little. He was so sweet and sad about it. I couldn’t say no. Josh was surprisingly cool about it too.”
Lily laughed harder, the sound bright and unrestrained. “Josh is a saint. Or maybe he’s just confident no one’s stealing you from him. But seriously, Aaron? The kid probably jerks off to thoughts of you every night. And now you’re playing fake girlfriend? This is going to be hilarious. You have to tell me every detail after Friday. Every. Single. Detail.”
They spent the next twenty minutes dissecting the situation, Lily teasing Chloe mercilessly about her “big heart” and her knack for landing in ridiculous scenarios. Chloe protested weakly between laughs, defending her choice while admitting how awkward it was going to be. By the end of the call, both girls were in stitches, the earlier tension of the day melting away into lighthearted camaraderie.
“You know what?” Lily said suddenly, her voice shifting to that confident, adventurous tone Chloe knew so well. “This calls for a girls’ night out. We’re going to the bars. Blow off some steam, flirt a little, remind ourselves that we’re hot and young. No more awkward teen crushes or babysitting guilt. Just us, looking killer, and maybe a few free drinks.”
Chloe hesitated for only a second. The idea sounded perfect—fun, carefree, and exactly what she needed after the emotional rollercoaster. “Okay, you’re on. Pick me up in an hour?”
“Make it forty-five minutes. I’m already pulling out my shortest dress,” Lily replied with a wicked grin in her voice.
Chloe hung up, a fresh surge of excitement bubbling inside her. She stood in front of her closet, rifling through outfits with renewed energy. Tonight was about feeling desired and confident, not worrying about anyone else’s expectations. She settled on a sleek black mini dress that hugged her toned figure perfectly. The hemline sat high on her thighs, showing off her long, smooth legs, while the sweetheart neckline accentuated her full breasts without being overly revealing. She paired it with strappy black heels that added several inches to her height, making her calves look sculpted and her walk more alluring. A touch of red lipstick, a sweep of mascara to highlight her bright blue eyes, and her long blonde hair cascading in loose waves over one shoulder completed the look. She checked herself in the mirror, turning side to side. The dress clung to her curves, and the heels made her feel powerful, sexy, and ready for anything.
A knock at the door announced Lily’s arrival. Chloe opened it to find her best friend looking every bit as stunning. Lily had chosen a deep crimson halter dress that was even shorter than Chloe’s, barely covering the tops of her thighs. It tied behind her neck, leaving her back exposed and showcasing her athletic build. Her dark hair was styled in loose curls, and she wore silver hoop earrings that caught the light. Black stiletto heels elongated her legs, and a confident smirk played on her lips.
“Damn, Chloe,” Lily whistled, looking her up and down. “You’re going to break hearts tonight. That dress is criminal. Aaron would die if he saw you like this.”
Chloe laughed, swatting her arm playfully. “Shut up. You look incredible too. That red is killer on you. We’re definitely getting free drinks.”
They posed in front of the mirror together for a quick selfie, arms around each other, laughing at how good they looked. Lily’s bold confidence rubbed off on Chloe, making her feel lighter and more adventurous. As they chatted about which bars to hit first—the lively pub downtown or the trendy cocktail lounge a few blocks over—their conversation drifted back to Aaron for a moment.
“I still can’t believe you agreed to it,” Lily said, shaking her head with amusement as she touched up her lipstick. “It’s so you, though. Kind to a fault. Just promise me you won’t let it get weird. Pretend for an hour, pat him on the head, and then we’re doing this again next weekend—properly.”
Chloe nodded, smiling. “Deal. Tonight is about us. No boys, no drama, just dancing and laughs.”
Lily grabbed her clutch and linked arms with Chloe. “That’s my girl. Let’s go cause some trouble.”
The two friends stepped out into the warm evening air, the sun just beginning its descent and painting the sky in soft oranges and pinks. Chloe’s heels clicked confidently against the sidewalk as they walked toward Lily’s car. The short hems of their dresses fluttered slightly in the breeze, drawing appreciative glances from a couple of passersby, but the girls paid them little mind. They were lost in conversation, giggling about potential dance-floor antics and the ridiculousness of Chloe’s upcoming “date.”
As they reached the car, Lily unlocked it with a beep. Chloe slid into the passenger seat, smoothing her dress down her thighs. The excitement of the night ahead thrummed through her—music, laughter, the thrill of being young and carefree. Lily cranked up the radio, some upbeat pop song filling the air, and they sang along loudly as she pulled away from the curb.
The bars awaited, promising a night of fun and freedom. Chloe leaned back in her seat, wind tousling her blonde hair through the open window, a bright smile on her face. Whatever awkwardness Friday brought with Aaron, tonight belonged to her and Lily.
