Chapter 2
by battleking90
How is Valerie involved?
She lured Jake to the Train Yard
So I started off pretty dark there. My bad, I was going for the whole "every hero/villian needs a dark prologue." I am going to add a TLDR at the beginning of chapter 3 if you do not wish to read all the gory details of Jake and Valerie's back story in chapter 1 and 2. My apologies in advance, but I'm not backing out now. Hopefully this chapter I can make it a little lighter, although there are some points I would like to hit that might not allow for that. But I promise this story will get lighter starting chapter 3. If you made it through chapter 1, thank you. "And here we go..."
************************************************************************************************
Memories slowly returned to Jake. Valerie wanted to show him something. She seemed upset, like she had been crying, but wouldn't talk about it with Jake. He relented in hopes she would change her mind.
They had taken a bus together, sitting silently in the back, watching the city skyline shift outside the window. Jake rested his hand on Valerie's leg in an attempt to calm her, but it seemed to only add to her anxiety.
They got off the bus when Valerie motioned for him to get up. Not a single word was uttered the entire ride, which created a thick tension between the two, something Jake was not used to. Out of everyone in the world, Valerie was the only person he truly felt at peace with. All these negative emotions were causing an awful sense of foreboding.
They slowly walked shoulder to shoulder down the dark sidewalk, the clouds rolled in, bringing with it light rain drops. Near the warehouses all the high school kids used as the unofficial drink spot, Valerie directed Jake toward a stack of cargo contains. In the dark light, the sun bleached red and blue paint seemed to suck all the brightness out of the vicinity, making it hard to distinguish shadow from whatever lurked in the shadows.
As they neared the containers, Jake noticed Valerie's paced had slowed, causing her to fall behind him. He stopped walking and turned to look at her, seeing clear trails of tears down both of her cheeks. Before he could ask for an explanation again, Jake felt searing pain on the top of his head. Someone hiding in the shadows had lunged out from behind and shattered a dry rotted fence board on top of Jake's head. Jake instantly dropped to a fetal position to protect the important organs of his body, while Valerie screamed in horror and regret. No words were spoken by his assailant, but quick footfalls in the gravel leading to Jake let him know the number unknown attackers was increasing.
Valerie continued to scream and cry, pleading with the unknown thugs to stop their merciless **** on Jake. Grunts and huffs surrounded Jake as fists and feet continued making painful contact all over his body, bringing with them the sweet release of unconsciousness. Just before he finally blacked out, the last thing Jake heard was a gruff voice that sounded very foreign yet familiar at the same time say "Shut this bitch up", swiftly followed by Valerie crying out in pain.
That last memory shocked Jake into action. The impending doom he had felt since he woke up.
Momentarily forgetting the pain and injuries he had received, Jake scanned around him, looking for any evidence of Valerie. There, 30 yards away, he spotted a heap of what looked like trash. But his instincts told him it was her.
Jake tried to stand to walk over to where Valerie was laying, but his broken ankle coupled with the other messed up ankle **** him to his knees quickly. He crawled as fast as he could through the sharp gravel, cutting up his legs and hands on his way to his friend. When he reached her, it was worse than he had ever seen. There was swelling and blood all over the exposed areas of skin. He absentmindedly noted that all her cloths were still in place where they belong, if just ripped in a few places and soaked in her blood. He leaned in to check for breathing, which he found a very small shaky breath.
"SOMEBODY HELP ME! ANYONE, PLEASE HELP ME. HELP MY FRIEND!" Jake wailed into the night. But the metallic clangs of a train moving near by drowned out all hope of anyone hearing his pleas.
Looking down to her face, tears flew from his face like a leaky faucet. "Why, why did you bring me here?" He wanted it to come out with anger, but all he could muster was sorrow. To him, he couldn't be angry at his only friend in the world. He knew better than most that you do what you must in order to survive. And with the planning that seemed to have go into this, Valerie had **** in the matter. At least that is what he was going to go with. "Why didn't you just let me come here by myself?" Jake wept softly.
Precious moments of self pity and sorrow for his friend ticked by, slowly burning away all the things that made Jake Jake. All except determination. Determination to save himself and his only friend.
Having watched a safety video of fire rescue, Jake had an idea of how to get Valerie out of the train yard. He wasn't sure of what all was wrong with her, but he was pretty sure she couldn't wait for someone to find her in the morning.
He maneuvered himself into position, then rolled onto his back, partly covering one of her sides. He pulled her arm and leg over himself before rolling away from while pulling her arm and leg with him, effectively pulling her onto his back while he was back into the crawling position.
He knew with the way his ankles were injured, there would be no way to walk out. The only option was to crawl back the way they came. He steeled himself for the journey ahead, he had a long distance to go over the equivalent of broken glass eith an extra person's weight on his back. But his and Valerie's safety was the most important thing to Jake, so he took in a deep breath and started his trek.
Jake immediately noticed the increased difficulty with another person in his back, the rocks cut a little deeper while his body ache from his many injuries.
But still, Jake persisted. Deep inside himself, he dug up all the pain, anger, and hate he had accumulated throughout the years, and burned it all to stoke the fires of his determination.
His vision started to close in, his head grew fuzzy. His hands started to slip from all the blood coming from the new wounds. But still, Jake persisted.
He persisted until someone pulled the weight from his back, signaling the end of his journey. Dizzy and almost blind, all he was able to do was whisper a quiet "help" before passing out from exhaustion and blood lose, hoping he got Valerie to help in time.
