Chapter 21
by
Spindizzy
How does she react?
She knows exactly what he's looking for
"Oooh, oh see!" The librarian said as if she'd suddenly chanced on the solution to a particularly knotty puzzle "Then you must want the new section."
James opened his mouth to ask what she meant but before he could finish the thought he saw it. A stone archway standing incongruously between modern literature and the history of philosophy. Beyond the archway, flickering oil lamps illuminated rows of heavy leather-bound books.
"That's impossible?" He said uncertainly.
"Uh-huh," Aisha agreed from behind him "it appeared this morning, my guess is some kind of dimensional fold, makes it bigger on the inside."
"You're a physicist? " James asked surprised by the woman's apparent expertise.
"Doctor Who fan," she laughed "I always knew my nerdy fandom would come in handy one day."
James nodded absently his attention still focused on the impossible sight before him.
"I'm a little surprised to see anyone today," the librarian continued "Seems like things are getting pretty crazy out there. Wouldn't you have been safer staying at home?"
"I, changed." He admitted, "all of a sudden and I got these, powers I suppose you'd call them, and I figured the library would be a good place to get some answers."
"Huh?" Aisha said "You don't have the Internet then? Google on your phone?"
"Sure I do," James shrugged "I just thought, that is, I..."
He trailed off suddenly uncertain. Why hadn't he at least tried searching online? He'd walked two miles in high heels and endured all manner of indignities and it hadn't even occurred to him to ask why. Why on earth had he been so certain he'd find answers in an ordinary public library?
"Oh my god," he couldn't help laughing at himself "talk out having a blonde moment. It's like this place has been calling me all day and I've just been rationalizing it."
What else had been missing, what other choices had he made without even knowing why?
"I know it's pretty wild isn't it," the librarian said, "it's not just our bodies that changed, we've got all these new instincts and abilities, it's bound to take a little getting used to."
"Yeah," James agreed before what she's saying fully registers "wait, we? You mean you changed too?"
Turning back to the reception desk he gasped as he saw her whole body for the first time. From the top of her head to the hem of her blouse she was a normal young woman but below her waist, she was something else entirely...
What is she?
