She is dead

Growing more and more concerned, Byleth placed her head onto Bernadetta's exposed chest, only to discover the worst.

Bernadetta hadn't passed out--she was dead.

"What have I done...?" Byleth asked.

She picked up the body, unlocked Bernadetta's room, and got Bernadetta's spare set of clothes onto the body. She then carried the dead recluse straight to Rhea to explain what happened. Rhea was horrified to learn that Bernadetta had died of a heart attack, and no one had noticed for an entire week.

Bernadetta's body was placed inside a casket, which was left in the dorm room she loved so much. The door was locked once again, and Byleth soon resigned from her position, accepting Edelgard's offer of becoming an Imperial soldier.

There are rumors that a ghost called the "Bernie Bear" still haunts Garreg Mach Monastery to this day.
