Scavenging along the way.

Realizing that your supplies will never last long enough for you to reach the mountains, you decide that you had better try scavenging for supplies along the way.

Towards mid afternoon, you see a little blue house along the way that doesn't look like its been looted too badly. Unlike most of the other houses you had passed along the way, all of the windows appear to be intact, or more commonly, boarded up. The yard is cleaner than most, with almost no rubble strewn about. And the doors all appear to be closed.

You find your footsteps drawing you closer and closer to the house. You reason that even if you cant find anything useful inside, it would still make a safe place to hold up for the night.
