Chapter 20 by Shadowmage Shadowmage

What's next?

Round 2

You headed back into the city. Your plan? Stop by the Pokemon Centre then face Brock. Your Eevee strategy works, Charmander’s picked up some new moves and on top of that you have a grass-type.

Your only issue now is the climbing walls in the Gym, but, you have a plan for that.

The rules had already been explained:

1 - You need to scale the rock walls.

2 - You can’t interfere with other challengers

3 - Wait your turn

Nothing said you had to climb the rock walls, just make your way up…

You burst through the Gym doors, head held high. You casually released Seedot and approached the walls.

“Alright Seedot,” you cracked your knuckles, “Vine Whip!”

A long vine shot from Seedot’s back and landed at the top of the second wall, you grabbed Seedot tight and yelled, “Retract!”

You felt your feet fly from the ground as Seedot’s vine pulled you over the first two walls. You cheered and repeated the order, reaching Brock without breaking a sweat.

You returned Seedot to his Pokeball and approached the Gym Leader for round two.

“I’ve gotta say, I love how you tackled the climb!” He exclaimed genuinely. “But, a smart climb doesn’t mean you’ve gotten better at fighting. So, come on, prove me wrong!” He smiled.

You took a deep breath and sent out Eevee, Brock sent out Geodude.

“Quick attack!” You ordered, Eevee swiftly darting over to Geodude and striking him head-on. “Agility! You shouted as soon as Eevee made contact with the rock-type. Your Pokemon responded well and sped away as soon as it made contact with Geodude.

Geodude swung out but missed the speeding Eevee.

You cheered and repeated your order over and over, Eevee striking Geodude repeatedly and evading all of its attacks. Brock snapped.

“Geodude! Defense Curl!” He barked, the rock Pokemon immediately covered its face with its arms and took the defensive. Eevee no longer seemed to be bothering it, so you changed tactics.

“Agility! in a circle!” You told Eevee who immediately began to run around Geodude repeatedly and at an ever-increasing speed. Eventually, your Pokemon began kicking up dust from the battlefield’s terrain. Eevee moved even faster and before long you could no longer see Brock’s Geodude. You smiled and returned Eevee to his Pokeball.

Time for a new move.

“Go Charmander!” You shouted, hurling your starter Pokemon’s ball. The dust hadn’t yet settled and Brock seemed too shocked to give his Pokemon a command. “Flamethrower! Through the centre” You ordered. Charmander reared back and let loose a stream of flames through the dust.

The flames broke through the barrier immediately dispersing it, the miniature whirlwind stoking the flames as it dispersed. The inferno hit Geodude hard and sent it flying back, crashing into the rear wall of the Gym.

Brock withdrew the defeated Geodude. He wiped some dust from his cheek, “Now that was an interesting move. Go Onix!” He yelled, throwing out his second Pokemon’s Pokeball with a whip of his arm.

Your stomach turned. Taking down Geodude filled you with confidence, but the sight of Onix completely drained you of it.

“It’s fine,” You muttered to yourself. “You’ve got three Pokemon, he's got one. None of yours have taken a hit. You’ve got this.”

You ordered Charmander to use flamethrower. Onix took the blast in stride and lunged at Charmander. Charmander moved to dodge and managed to avoid the brunt of the hit but still took a hit on its side from the rock-type and was knocked to the ground.

The second your Pokemon stood you called for him to use flamethrower once more. Again he hit Onix but the Gym Leader’s Pokemon weathered the hit again and lunged at Charmander once more, this time hitting directly and knocking Charmander out of the battle.

You bit your lip before sending out Eevee. Onix lunged and Eevee sped away, you called for him to Quick Attack and the Pokemon circled around and hit Onix from behind. The rock-type spun around and you were able to repeat your move and have Eevee speed behind Onix and hit it again.

“Rock tomb!” Brock screamed. Onix slammed the ground sending rocks flying into the air before striking each of them down towards Eevee. The Pokemon tried to move away but rocks landed in its path, leaving it open for the final strike.

You withdrew Eevee. Time for your Grass-type. You threw in Seedot and immediately ordered it to use Vine Whip. A vine sprouted from Seedot’s back and struck Onix three times, sending the Rock-type back. It looked in bad shape.

Onix smashed into the ground again to use Rock Throw but you countered with Bullet Seed. The rock projectile shattered from the seeds and then Onix came under fire. Onix withstood the attack but was hunched in pain. It lunged at Seedot, but a single well-timed Vine Whip knocked Onix from its path and out of the battle.

You won.

You jumped in the air and cheered. Brock approached you with a smile and lifted your hand above your head. He handed you the Boulder badge and congratulated you, “Well done newbie!”

You healed your Pokemon at the Gym’s front desk and headed to Mt. Moon. A spring in your step. As you headed into Route 3 you were stopped.

The guy wore a hard hat and overalls. “Sorry, Mt Moon has had a cave-in, it’s closed for now.”

“Oh, okay...” You responded dejectedly before turning around. Hopefully, it won’t be too long before the cave opens again. You headed back into the Pokemon Centre and extended your stay in your room. You decided to grab a shower and some room service, to reward yourself for your victory, and head to bed early.

You flopped onto the bed and pulled out your phone. You decided to text Jaden and then call your mother. She was ecstatic to hear about your win, you made sure to leave out some of the losses you took. And you were happy to hear about the current goings-on in Pallet Town. Apparently, everything seems to be a bit more peaceful since Blue left, who’d have thunk it? Everyone, of course. The two of you talked into the night.
