Revelations

Chapter 8 by LustOverLove LustOverLove

The walk back to the landing pod was quiet. Terry led the pace, humming to himself and entirely oblivious, pleased with the day's progress and the discovery of fresh water. Behind him, Emma and Elise walked in a tense silence. Every time the wind rustled through the tall grass, Emma’s skin pricked with a lingering, sensitized heat.

That evening, the pod felt smaller than usual. After a quick meal of heated ration packs, Terry retired to his sleeping quarters, exhausted from the trek.

Emma sat at the small metallic table in the common area, staring blankly at the perimeter monitor. The screen showed the green vector grid surrounding their habitat—a tiny island of human tech encircled by an vast, silent forest.

The door to the command nook hissed open, and Captain Elise stepped out. She had changed into a grey tank top and sweatpants, her wet hair slicked back. She didn't sit down immediately; instead, she walked over to the supply locker, poured two cups of recycled water, and placed one in front of Emma.

"You've been staring at that display for an hour" Elise said softly, her voice barely above a whisper so as not to wake Terry.

"Just... thinking about tomorrow's schedule" Emma lied, keeping her eyes glued to the screen.

Elise leaned against the edge of the table, crossing her arms. She looked down at Emma with a sharp, calculating gaze—the look of a captain who had spent years reading people in high-stress environments.

"The pollen," Elise began quietly. "It did something to us. Not just the heat."

Emma's heart gave a sudden, hard thud against her ribs. "It was just a skin reaction, Elise. Like my dad said, some mild allergen—"

"He didn't feel a thing," Elise interrupted gently, cutting her off. "And Terry wasn't on the far side of that pool."

Emma froze, her hands tightening around her plastic water cup.

"I saw the water, Emma," Elise continued, bending down so her face was level with Emma's. Her breath was warm, her cheeks still sporting a faint, unnatural flush that hadn't faded since they left the grotto. "I saw the blue light under the surface. And I saw the way you looked when you stepped out of that water."

Emma swallowed hard, feeling exposed and suddenly terrified that the Captain was about to log a containment threat or restrict her to quarters. "Elise, I—"

"I felt it too," Elise whispered, her tone shifting from stern command to something raw and confessive.

Emma looked up, startled.

Elise’s eyes were intense, dark, and filled with a strange, conflicting mix of discipline and deep desire. "When I was washing off on the shallow ledge... something brushed past my waist. Soft. Smooth. It sent a pulse right through me. My heart almost burst out of my chest. I should have drawn my weapon. I should have called Terry." She paused, exhaling slowly. "But I didn't. I couldn't."

The silence between them in the cramped pod was suffocating. The shared confession dissolved the rigid barrier of rank that had always existed between the Captain and Emma.

"It felt... amazing," Emma admitted quietly, the truth spilling out before she could stop herself. "It wasn't trying to hurt us. It was like... it was connecting with us."

"It's responsive to our biology for sure," Elise said, a subtle, dangerous smile touching the corner of her lips. "And whatever it left on our skin... I can still feel it humming."

Elise leaned in closer, tapping a finger on the perimeter monitor screen, right over the coordinates of the thermal grotto.

"Terry is planning to set up the solar arrays on the east ridge tomorrow morning," Elise said, her voice dropping to a low, conspiratorial murmur. "He'll be occupied for at least four hours."

"Are you saying what I think you're saying?" Emma asked, her pulse quickening.

"I'm saying the Captain is ordering a follow-up reconnaissance mission," Elise said, her eyes flashing with unspoken anticipation. "Just the two of us. We go back to the pool, we find out what's down there... and we don't tell Terry a single word."
