Remain under the car

You feel your right knee was scrapped and is probably bleeding but you can't see it since you are stretched out under a car. A piece of gravel is digging into your chest and another is burrowing into your thigh. All the while the small dog keeps yapping at you from the streetside. But then the dog is lifted up and out of sight by a pair of hands.

"Shoosh Tootie," a lady says, now holding her dog that must have got away from her. "Hi girls," she says and the pair of girls going down the sidewalk, now stop near your car.

"Hi Mrs. Reynolds, "one of the girls says.

They chitchat about nothing really and then it turns to babysitting and one of the girls will be babysitting for the lady with the dog. Great. You're stuck under this car that stinks of oil and grease and they are standing around comfortably wearing clothes and not even appreciating it at all. Finally, they say their goodbyes. After waiting a decent amount of time, you peek out from under the car and see it's ok to scoot out. You want to see your cut knee but it's too dark and you can feel the sicky blood as you pull your fingers away from the sore place.

As you creep down the sidewalk remembering to stay in the shadows, you step on loose pebbles and feel the bottom of your feet bruising, Then out of no where you hear thunder and the wind starts to pick up and leaves and twigs are scattering across your path. You feel the first few cold drops of rain and know you need to find some cover. The rain picks up and it's really coming down now. The darkness and rain give you some since of comfort that no one will be out in this but you.

You jog across the street, wishing you had not when another lose piece of gravel bruises your heel as you came down on it with all your weight. You limp to someone's yard, looking for cover, when you see a lit window. You draw closer and see a lady reclining in a chair with a blanket covering her legs. She takes a sip of something hot since steam is rising from the rim of her cup. The rain is cold and you shiver naked in the rain while this lady enjoys her warm drink. A car drives by and slows down and a search light beams in your direction and you now see this is a police car. You have to move but for a few seconds you can't. Finally, you decide to do something.
