‘Which hotel?’ You can hear Sarah tapping a keyboard in the background. ‘The Rose, the Louis?’

‘Uh.’ There’s a pause, until Emma adds hurriedly, ‘yes, the Louis, yeah. That’s where I am.’

‘Okay. All right then.’ Sarah’s voice takes on a maternal edge. ‘Now just stay where you are until I come pick you up. And then we’ll sort out this whole mess, okay?’

‘Okay…’ Emma throws you an I’m-so-sorry look. ‘Thanks, Sarah. Bye.’

By the time she turns to you with a question on her lips, you’re already hunting for your boxers. ‘The Louis? That’d be the Louis on the other side of town, right?’
