Chapter 77 by TumblingMice TumblingMice

What do you do with your newfound army?

Use them as a giant distraction

An utter cacophony of yells, shouts, cheers, screams, battle cries, chants, bardic music, horns, drums, clashing swords, and many other sounds besides echoes in the huge cavern that makes up the heart of the goblin base. The adventurers enthusiastically push the goblins back, doing a decent job of dividing themselves by level to fight enemies they outclass. A mage crunches into a wall and disappears, the ogre's wooden club that slammed into her still stuck in the rock. Not a perfect job, evidently: even the relatively weak ogre on this level shouldn't be taken lightly. Tlax and the two fallen angels rush through the commotion to join you at the entrance to the prison.

"What took you so long?"

"Well, Mr Bigshot over here had to go on another recruiting drive." Ari pouts and puts her hands on her hips, staring sternly at you.

"Hey, don't act like you and Celestina didn't enjoy yourselves as well." The three newcomers look confused, so Ari points at the bare butt of the magus and makes a sucking motion with her hand and mouth.

"Ooh," Mariel smirks, "was she good?"

"She was great, and by the sounds of it Celestina and Ari had no complaints about her friends either." The two blush but don't dispute your statement.

"Heavens, can't you three keep it in your pants for five minutes? We're supposed to be killing goblins here," Sera is not amused.

"Hey, you try to stop him next time," Ari smirks, "although we all know you'd be the first one with your panties off." Sera rolls her eyes.

"Tlax?" The gorgon is silent, staring down. You trace her eyes to your crotch, a bulge visible in the fabric.

"Hard..." You snap your fingers in front of your eyes. "Right, sssorry. Later."

"Okay, anyways, if you three are done complaining about not getting a turn, let's go kill some goblins. And maybe level yourselves into some glamour skills so that you can join in next time." Your group steps out into the cavern again and you have to duck as a level five rogue who got too close to a warg goes flying over your head and down into the cavern, giving a surprised shout the whole way.

"Anyways, let's let this lot take out the trash and check out what's down there."

"Um, how?" Celestina pipes up, then tenses up as you wrap her in a hug. "Erm, this isn't the time." You dive off the edge and her eyes widen, then she lets out a little 'oh' as your bony wings extend from your back and the two of you stabilize into a glide towards an island below. You turn your neck to see Mariel carrying Ari and Sera carrying Tlax behind you, and a short fall later the six of you stand in a new part of the dungeon.

The stench of **** surrounds you, and you look up to see a huge mound of stitched-together corpses staring at you. The ring of steel leaving sheaths echoes around you and the abomination lurches into motion, swinging a corpse in its huge arm as if it were a club as it shambles towards you. The air above it is rent apart as you bring down a pillar of holy fire, the dead flesh turning to ash from the impact. The thing falls to its knees, and the singing blades of Sera and Tlax quickly dismember it. Maybe that flame strike was a bit overkill.

A growl echoes through the cave and you turn to see Feathers the barbarian astride her favourite warg, four beastmasters riding in a V formation behind her. "Red guy is here! Boss says no talk this time." The goblins charge while chanting "Burn! Slay! Cut! Maim! Bite! Eat! Fresh! Meat!" Drool flies from the wargs' lips as the furry **** machines charge your group. You light up the island with a huge wall of fire which separates you from the canine cavalry, and everyone save you and Sera nocks an arrow in their bow. The flames part as a hooting goblin flies through atop a barking warg, then four enchanted arrows lodge in his chest, knocking him directly into the wall of fire. Flame Tongue lashes out from Sera's hand and wraps around the warg's front lets, causing it to barrel over as its back legs keep bounding forward and be dispatched by a flourish and a stab from the dark angel's black blade.

More barking rings through the roar of the fire as four more wargs jump through simultaneously. The next volley of projectiles is scattered among the overabundance of targets: one of the wargs takes hits from Tlax and Ari, the next warg's rider has a new piercing courtesy of Celestina, the third goblin takes a hit from Mariel in the shoulder, and your firebolt scorches the final warg's fur. Tlax and Ari stow away their bows and draw swords as the ferocious riders rapidly close the distance, and you crouch as the last wolf rushes towards you. The goblin eggs its mount on, shaking the reins while holding his axe high, and you let loose a cone of fire at the last moment, catching both of them point-blank in the face. You're knocked off your feet as the wolf trips and its furry side slams into you, its bulk pinning you to the ground. Tlax, Ari, and Sera deflect the swings of the three other riders, and you claw at the twisted wolf's tough hide to no avail.

Crazed laughter bursts out near you and a goblin emerges from over the wolf, scorch marks covering his skin and an axe held high. You let out a firebolt which he accepts gleefully, and you hold out your other hand to try to block the impact. You wince from the axe's bite, your arm falling uselessly to the side, but all you can do to prepare for the next blow is hold up your other hand. The goblin suddenly reels back and collapses as two blue arrows sprout from his chest thanks to the remaining two archers on your side, vanishing into a few gold coins. You groan and slash the warg a few more times, and finally its bulk vanishes from your chest and you're able to reach down to grab your healing potion.

By the time your arm has healed and you're back up Tlax has cut down a second wolf. She moves to help Ari when a frenzied yell accompanies the barbarian's wolf diving through the fire, its rider hooting war cries with twin axes held high. She parries two arrows with her hatchets then swings at Sera's exposed back, and the dark angel barely swings around to block in time, staggering back as the ring of steel fills your ears.

You launch a fireball at the warg rider now behind her, and the arrows and holy flame now flying towards him provokes him to turn in your direction. This time you avoid any heroics and step out of the way as the beast charges by, and Mariel readies her spear to catch the mounted goblin. The pointed shaft of wood lifts the little green rider completely clear of her saddle, and Celestina draws a curved dagger and slashes at the wolf while Mariel finishes off its rider.

Clash after clash rings out as Sera can't find any breaks in the barbarian's ****, holding up her sword and parrying for dear life as the blows rain down. Ari disengages her wolf rider, leaving Tlax to finish the job, and charges the goblin from behind. The diminutive berserker nimbly leaps off her mount in a flurry of steel, switching to defence and blocking both women's swords as the massive canine disengages and then pounces at you.

You roll to the side and launch a jet of fire at the warg champion, its fur absorbing some of the blaze but hair after hair catching fire nonetheless. "My lord! We need you!" You turn to see Mariel being pushed back by the wounded but hardy beastmaster while Celestina slowly backs away from the goblin's mount, slashing at the wolf with her dagger to try to keep it away from her. Two spent potions lie on the floor near them: experienced though they may be, neither woman is specialized in prolonged melee engagements.

The huge warg rights itself and bears down on you, your vision split between the massive monster about to eat you for lunch and your companions pinned down by its lesser kin. You dodge out of the way a second time, then suddenly the wolf whimpers as a huge two-handed sword stabs into it. Sandra the warrior gives you a brief glance before going back to the fight, and when the canine wheels around it finds itself face to face with Lucia's blue energy blade. You take a brief glance at her bare rear then spin around, leaving your new acquaintances to deal with the champion.

Celestina lets out a yelp as her back strikes the rocky wall, then lets out a wild slash at the air in front of her. "Stay back!" A look of panic crosses her face. She's momentarily obscured when the warg is consumed by a pillar of holy fire, and when she stands up the beast is no more. The ranger flashes you an exhausted smile then draws her bow and shoots an arrow at the back of the goblin bearing down on her angelic friend. The small beastmaster stumbles and drops her axe, then vanishes in a flash as Mariel takes advantage of the opening with her spear.

"Sniffles! We go!" The wounded beast bounds away from the two swordswomen and charges at its master, a bolt of light from Becca the cleric following behind it. The two archers behind you launch a volley at the last remaining beastmaster, and with the combined **** of your group he's dispatched as his leader disappears into the gloom. You turn to see Lucia's group standing in a fighting pose, swords pointed towards your daemonic companions.

"Easy. Lucia, Becky, Sandra, these are Mary, Sera, and Tlax. They're with me. Mary, Sera, Tlax, these three are what held us up earlier."

The scantily clad warrior women lower their weapons. "Your friend has a nice dick." Lucia leaves little doubt as to what you meant by holding you up earlier. "Anyhow, where do you figure the boss is at?"

"My guess is we'll find him at the bottom of this pit. Do you three have any way of getting down? If not, you could try following the goblin barbarian and see if that leads you down there."

"What, and leave the boss for you to finish before we get there? Not a chance, stud. Besides, from the looks of her the three of us would be hard-pressed to take both her and her wolf at the same time." The cleric mutters something and golden wings appear behind all of their backs, and moments later you and your allies of convenience soar down to the level below. This time, the ground rushes out to meet you: the crevasse doesn't continue any further into the earth.

You peer into the gloom, numerous tunnels winding into the walls of the chasm. The sounds of battle above are muted here, the remaining adventurers and goblins now far above you. "Which way do you figure we should go? They all look the same."

"If I had to guess, I'd say... that one," Mariel spins and points off in a direction.

"Did you find a map aga—never mind." You turn to see the huge stone arch she's highlighted, a snoozing ogre sitting in front of it. "Well, this dungeon won't clear itself." You light a ball of golden flame in your hand and the ogre stirs, slowly pushing itself to its feet with a fat, sweaty hand. Rings of steel sound out all around you as your companions draw their weapons, and with the two-headed giant's angry roar the battle is joined.

What lies on the other side of the arch?
