Chapter 8
by
Alias The Rat
What's next?
A musical interlude, and a mysterious man.
As the pair walk up the stairs, strains of rock music reach their ears.
'My time comin', any day, don't worry 'bout me, no. Been so long I felt this way, I'm in no hurry, no. Rainbows end down that highway where ocean breezes blow. My time comin', voices sayin'. They tell me where to go.'
Jane glances at Kane. "Is someone actually playing a radio in the middle of all this?"
Kane frowns at her, and motions at her to be silent as they reach the bottom of the stairs.
'...I know where to go. California! Preachin' on the burnin' shore! California! I'll be knockin' on the golden door! ' Turning, they realize the music is coming from a jukebox playing near the entrance of a bistro. A man in a dark suit appears to be seated there, sipping a cup of coffee. The two hunters level their guns at him. 'Like an angel! Standin' in a shaft of light! Risin' up to paradise! I know I'm gonna to shine!'
He glances up at them, revealing a strong face with high cheekbones, and a prominent jaw. His complexion is cadaverous, his hair and eyes dark. "Hello," he says calmly, sipping his coffee. The hunters keep their guns leveled at him. 'My time comin', any day, don't worry 'bout me, no. It's gonna be just like they say! Them voices tell me so. Seem so long I felt this way, an' time sure passin' slow. Still I know I'll lead the way--they tell me where I go. An' don't worry 'bout me, oh no no, don't worry 'bout me, no...' The man slowly raises his left hand, and snaps his fingers. The music stops. "There. Now we can talk without distractions." He smiles and sets down his coffee. "Care for some espresso?"
Do they?
