Chapter 667

What do you do?
Listen to the story.
"The catfolk and bunnyfolk kept mostly to themselves, each under the leadership of their creator. They lived off the land. Hunted animals, gathered fruits and vegetables, and moved from place to place. A true connection to the natural world. While me and Lepo had pure intentions, with mortals come conflict, and these beastfolk were no different than any others. Sometimes they would feud over land or resources when they wandered too close, though they weren't enemies. The disagreements were minor, and there were still times when they would come together and enjoy each other's company. One day, me and the Mother of Bunnyfolk decided to meet up alone and discuss the future of our lives. What we would do. Where we would go. How our people would fare."
Feli turns. She brings her hand slowly through the air before her, and as she does, the environment shifts. She disappears along with the entire land around your party. Suddenly, you're all sitting in a completely different field--a plain that's familiar yet different.
You turn to see her up ahead, but she isn't alone. It doesn't feel like the same woman as before either. She looks the same, but neither her nor the other with her seem to notice your party's presence. They continue to speak among each other, and you perk up your ears to listen. The woman with her is similar in a lot of ways. It's the one from the painting.
Behind them is a tall, red trunk leading up to branches casting a shadow over the area. Rays from the sun pierce between the leaves.
The woman who you assume is Lepo dresses in the exact same manner, meaning nothing at all besides a loin cloth billowing in the breeze between her legs. Long white hair runs down her body just enough to cover the goods, but instead of it fading to orange, instead the hair gradually turns to blue. Her eyes match--a deep azure. Rabbit ears protrude high above her head, and sticking out from her lower back is a large, round, fluffy tail. Both women glow, and their voices resonate across the area. Whether you consider them true deities or not, their presence is unmistakably different then that of a normal being.
"Our children should soon be left to carve their own destinies," speaks Lepo. Her voice is similar to the other. "I was thinking... I would live the rest of my life in a peaceful place, and I... W-Well, you could... I mean, we could b-both..." Though as she speaks, her face begins to fill even more prominently with colour, and she stumbles over her words to the point of the other looking confused.
"S-Speak up!" Feli blurts out. She crosses her arms over her chest. "When you look like that... C-Cute, and..." It seems the other is getting flustered just as quickly.
"Are you mocking me?!" Lepo shouts. The area around her trembles as an invisible wave of energy buffets the long blades of grass and flowers.
"No! Goodness. You're just an idiot, you know that?"
"You're the idiot, you idiot!"
Both turn away in a huff--faces red. They grumble under their breath, but neither of them has the courage to turn back around and face the other.
Feli whispers. "Whenever we meet up... It's just hard because--"
Unfortunately, even with Lepo's supernatural hearing, she doesn't seem to have noticed the other speak. "It always ends like this. Y-You're so difficult."
"Well I'm going away soon. I'll create a new home for myself, and there I'll sleep the rest of my days."
Lepo turns. "Good! Me too."
"I'm glad you're happy!" Feli turns around as well.
"It's good to see you have things figured out!"
They stare at each other for a lengthy moment. Soon, the area around you wobbles. The illusion fades, and the land around you shapes itself back into how it was before. Once again, before you is a tree holding the painting of a rabbit, and beside it is the Mother of Catfolk looking down between her toes with a surprising visage of shame.
She continues. "We spoke like that for a bit longer, but I'll spare you the details. It was the last time we saw each other. We had spoken numerous times before that, but they tended to end in a similar way. This was the finale, however. Now she does the same as I do. We left the fate of the beastfolk up to them. While I feel a great regret that the discourse between both races didn't fade, and instead our feuds were mistaken for something greater, I am glad to see that my children continue to flourish." With a smile, she steps over to Snow and bends down to place a hand on her head. Her breasts hang down--hair barely able to continue to cover them. You get a slight glimpse before she pulls herself back up.
Snow blushes and closes her eyes to the touch. "A pat... from a goddess," she mumbles.
You stare blankly back. "So all the conflict could have been avoided if both goddesses didn't act like bumbling school girls?"
"E-Excuse me?" Feli is taken aback. "The feelings of a maiden are complicated! You can't hope to understand."
"Literally Yin was able to come out and say it to your face a few minutes ago. You'd think an ancient being would be able to--"
"It's Lepo's fault just as much as it is mine!" she cuts you off. After a long pause, she crosses her arms once again, leans back on the side of the redwood, and stares towards the horizon. Her voice calms as she takes a deep breath. "I'm not all-powerful or all-knowing. I may have spawned the catfolk race, but I'm not an omniscient being in control of the world. Just a great magical being from ages passed. With everything I'm able to do, I still can't confront the woman I care about. Because after all this time, she certainly hates me. I can't bear to see her again."
Yin stands and shakes her head. "No... I think she does still care about you!"
"This matter is so beyond me." Taiga sits quietly with her spear resting over her lap. "I won't pretend to understand the strife of either race, but I don't know what I would do if my creator returned. That would be a lot worse than this I guess."
Snow takes a knee. "My goddess. I hope it isn't overstepping our boundaries, but would you let us speak to Lepo ourselves? I can't bear knowing you'll live the rest of your days on this world with an aching heart."
You stand up and shrug. "I agree. This is all kinda silly, but I would feel bad leaving you here like this too. Like Snow said, why don't you tell us where this Mother of Bunnyfolk is? We can see how she feels. Maybe she does actually care about you, and is sitting somewhere with a heart aching just as much as your own?"
"It would... feel dreadful," Feli mutters with a hand on her heart.
"Do you know where she is?"
She slowly nods. "It's within the Western Pecho Peaks. Only about... fifty or so miles from the entrance to the cave you came through. B-But don't come on strong. I don't want you to embarrass me in front of her."
Taiga raises her hand. "We actually found this place looking for treasure to fund our settlement. You wouldn't happen to have some--"
"You shouldn't ask her something like that!" Snow interjects.
"My hopes aren't high, but if we truly are able to make amends... I will owe you a debt greater than any other," Feli responds. "Any treasure I have will be yours. And it's possible Lepo will feel the same. I have no use for material wealth, but I have gathered certain artifacts that will likely be worth a sizable sum."
"Then consider it done." Taiga lifts herself up off the ground.
"We should rest before we leave," you suggest. "Even though it's bright here, it is actually night time."
"Feel free to stay here until it turns to morning on the other side." Feli raises up her hand. He looks as if she's able to touch the sky, and with a turn of her wrist, the sun shifts towards the horizon. It grows darker. Stars appear, and just like that, it's the middle of the night. A full moon illuminates the grassy landscape and the glistening stream. "Sleep well, my children. And thank you."
