Chapter 7 by Donny P Donny P

What happens at work?

He fixes some messes.

The first person Jax saw when he arrived at work was Mike.

"Jax! Where have you been! We need all the boss loot drops done before Friday so we can send the designs to-"

"Damn, would you get off my back? I'm just a half hour later than usual!"

Mike instantly relaxed. "Oh, sure, no problem!"

Jax realized his mistake. He hadn't meant to use his powers. Mike was an okay guy, he just got a little pushy under deadlines. It wasn't so bad, though. He hadn't messed up the guy's personality, this question was more of a one-off. Jax thought carefully about what he was about to say in order to make sure it wasn't a question. "Hey, I heard there is a basketball game at lunch."

"Yeah, we're just going to change here and drive down to the court at the community center. You up for it?"

"Absolutely!" said Jax. They parted, and Jax continued on to his cubicle. Along the way, he thought about all the people he'd interacted with the day before. Before he sat down, he stopped and asked under his breath, "Is there a list of all the yes/no questions that I asked yesterday waiting on my desk?" He was disappointed to find that his desk was clean. It wasn't going to be quite that easy.

There was a conspicuous coughing sound behind Jax. He turned around and saw Alice smiling at him, but in a weird, shy way he'd never seen before. "Morning, Alice! How's everything?"

"Oh wow, you didn't hear?"

"Hear about what?"

"Janice got fired."

"What?! Why?"

"They caught her on a video camera last night. She was stealing from the petty cash. Julie fired her this morning. Security had to escort her out."

"Fuck!" Jax realized that Julie may be his sex ****, but he'd done nothing to make her less of a raging monster boss. "That's so fucking unfair! Did she even find out why Janice did that? Nothing like this has happened before."

"Didn't you know?" asked Alice. "This isn't the first time. Janice has stolen money a couple of times before to pay off her gambling debts."

Jax started to respond, then froze. He thought back on the past and realized that he had memories of loaning Janice money more than once, money she never paid back. He also had memories of other people complaining about her borrowing money. He realized that these were new memories. Had he done something to change her? What had they talked about yesterday?

Then it hit him. They'd talked about gambling. He couldn't remember the exact conversation, but clearly he'd changed something.

"Hey Alice, is Janice the kind of person who would never gamble?"

"Yeah, that sounds like Janice," said Alice.

"Did someone say my name?" asked Janice as she walked up to the cubicle with a folder.

Jax felt relieved. He'd fixed that screw-up, but what else had he done? He listened as Janice told him about a meeting and gave him the folder, but only barely. Mainly he was trying to think about what else he needed to fix.

Oh god. That weird conversation with Helen about cola. What horrible things had she done with a soda can lover?

"Hey Janice, I just remembered something urgent. Can I talk to you about this later?"

"Yeah, no problem!" said his supervisor. She headed off to another worker's cubicle.

Jax got up, but as he started to leave, Alice lightly touched his arm with her fingertips. "Hey, so, um, do you have any lunch plans today?"

"Yeah, playing basketball," said Jax, totally distracted. "I might be free tomorrow, maybe? I gotta go!"

Jax almost ran through the office. He found Helen, still holding what was probably the same soda can. She was staring at it with a lovesick expression and gently stroking the top with her heavily tattooed hand.

"Hi Helen. You hate soda because it is unhealthy and don't have any tattoos, right?"

"Yeah, that's right," said Helen as the soda in her hand was replaced with a cup of green tea and her tattoos all disappeared. "That's a weird and specific question."

"Oh, yeah, um... fuckit, would you please forget I asked that?"

Helen smiled at Jax. "Good morning, Jax!"

He nodded at her. "Morning, Helen."

He walked away, sighing in relief. Was there anything else he needed to clean up? He could only think of one other problem area from the previous day.

Jax entered the infirmary and found Dr. Walker working on some lab results. She looked up from her desk and said, "Hello, Jax. Did you come for your test results? It takes longer than a day to get them back."

"No, I just wanted to chat. We've actually been working in the same company for a bit, and I felt bad that I'd never introduced myself before yesterday."

She smiled at him, but in a very professional, reserved way. "Yes, it's always good to make friends at work. My husband likes to remind me of that."

Right. Her husband, who, judging by her ring finger, had not existed before yesterday. Jax couldn't remember all the details of their conversation, but maybe he didn't have to.

"Dr. Walker, could your life go back to the way it was before we talked yesterday?"

"Yes, but, what does that mean exactly?"

Jax looked over the attractive doctor. The ring on her finger was gone, and it also seemed like her body had changed somehow. It was hard to tell under that long lab coat she was wearing. He was glad that he'd managed to fix the last of the problems he'd caused, and now it was time to get back to making improvements.

What's his first move?
