Volunteering for an experiment

Memories come flooding back to you in a rush. Walking down a long narrow hall lit by flicking fluorescent lights. Your head pounding in time with your footsteps as you paid the price for last night's party.

You were seriously considering blowing off this whole medical testing gig and heading home to sleep it off but you could do with the money and by the time you'd thought it over you were already at the end of the hall and this old guy was opening it to welcome you in.

He introduced himself as Professor Hans Neudman and had you sign a bunch of forms before explaining what the tests were all about. Not that you understood much of the explanation. Some nonsense about neural mirroring and quantum states. In the end, you agreed it would be best if he just showed you.

Next thing you knew they were strapping you into a weird contraption, something like a cross between a dentist's chair and an explosion in a hardware store, and then...

And then nothing, darkness, the void, then here.

"Oh shit," you breathed finally recognizing Professor Neudman "It was you! You did this to me. Um, what exactly did you do anyway?"
