The evening sun cast long, eerie shadows as James approached Keren's house, his heart pounding with a mix of anticipation and dread. The house loomed before him, its windows dark and foreboding. He tried the front door, but it was locked tight. Undeterred, James circled the house, peering through the windows, hoping to catch a glimpse of Keren. The interior was silent and still, no sign of life.
As he pressed his face against the glass, a voice cut through the quiet evening. "Who are you? Why are you sneaking into Keren's house?"
James turned to see a woman standing a few feet away, her appearance striking and somewhat unnerving. She was in her late forties, her makeup heavy and exaggerated, giving her the appearance of a woman who had seen too many nights on the town. Her clothes were tight and revealing, and she carried herself with a confidence that bordered on arrogance.
"Um, I'm looking for Mrs. Keren," James stammered, trying to gather his thoughts. "I'm her step-daughter Nina's husband."
The woman's eyes widened in recognition. "Nina's husband? James! Congratulations on your wedding."
James was taken aback. "Thank you, ma'am. How do you know me?"
The woman extended a perfectly manicured hand. "I'm Sandra. Why don't you come to my house? We can talk while having coffee."
James hesitated, his instincts warning him that this woman was not to be trusted. Her appearance and demeanor screamed trouble, and he was already in enough of a mess without adding more complications. "No, I'm okay here," he replied, his voice firm.
Sandra took a step closer, her eyes never leaving his. "Don't worry, James. I'm not the kind of person you're thinking of."
James's mind raced as he considered his options. He needed answers, and Sandra might be his only lead. But could he trust her? The tension hung heavy in the air as he weighed the risks and rewards of accepting her invitation.
