Stew With The Crew

Jade stepped out of her room and walked downstairs. She was in no mood to eat with anyone let alone her family so hopefully for her this would be quick. As she entered the living room, she saw her father unwinding on the couch.

“Hey dad. How was work.” Jade forced out a replay. Her father greeted her back.

“Hey Jade, Same shit different day. Get some food we can chit chat later. Her father was never one for small talk. Steven Wilder was like an average Joe. Clean cut, respectable and ...well vanilla. He was the kindest man she ever knew but he was the safe type. She never got how mom and he got together but if it weren’t for that she wouldn’t be here.

She followed suit and sat down just as her mother Emma set the table and got everything settled. Jades brother Paul was already sitting at the table and shoveling food into his mouth. She noticed her mom was day dreaming looking at her soup and her father was completely oblivious. Jade sat down. ‘Well this is gonna be fun’ Jade says under her breath.

She hated that she lived at home but being that it was free and the house was big enough to get lost in it wasn’t so bad. She had a pool and hot tub, a pretty nice kitchen and a large bedroom. She did have to share a bathroom with her brother, but it was what it was. She took a plate full of food and started to eat.

The dinner went on. Paul said something random about computers and Jades father just nodded and pretended he knew what he was talking about. Jade did notice though her mother not making eye contact with either of them.

“Jade did you hear me?” Steven said.

“Oh what sorry…this stew is distracting.” Jade lied.

“Sure it’s the stew. “Paul rolled his eyes. For an adopted brother, he was a dick. Jade wishes they had returned him.

“Jade I asked you how was is science project coming along?” Her dad asked again.

“Oh Ya that’s right. Well still in the planning stages but they haven’t assigned partners yet.” Jade replied. Judging by how today was going she had a sinking feeling that she would be paired up soon and she hated who it may be.

“Oh well if you need help let me know.” Steven said and went back to eating. The thing about Jade’s dad was he worked in administration. He had a lot of contacts and eyes everywhere. He knew things and saw stuff, so she really needed to keep him out of the loop because last thing she wanted him to know was his daughter was a slut for use by the most power guy in college. She shuddered and started to eat again.

‘I wonder who this could be.’ Jade rolled her eyes and looked down. She pulled her phone out and this time prepared herself for what she was about to see. Thankfully, it was a text from her boss Jim.

‘’ Hey Jade, can you cover a shift tomorrow night? 5-close? It would be you the two new girls and Selene. "

Jade sighed and debated. After a brief pause she reluctantly said yes. She never could say no to anything. At least she could hang out with Selene. She finished up and excused herself. She was tired of being around people and needed to go to bed. It was around 9pm now and she needed to be up early.

Just then Steven got a call and left the table quickly and left to the office. Emma sighed and just continued to eat. Her mind was somewhere else. Practically at the same time Paul got up and without saying a word ran up the stairs.

“ Well I guess that's my que. Goodnight mom. see you later." Jade said as she got up and strutted off . She gave one more wave to her family and headed off to bed.
