Chapter 12 by MidbossMan MidbossMan

Will you stay to check on Madison, or go assist with Au Revoir?

Use your sleeping powder to pass by the guards (Vaarvel route)

You thanked each of the guards... then covered your mouth with your left hand and uncapped your sleeping powder with one thumb of the right. You smashed the vial of powder upon the door between the two of them, then jumped back quickly. Getting the two of them to take off their helmets hadn't just been a matter of confirming their identities. The two were blocking your path to Madison and you had to get in there, preferably without letting them know how desperate you were to confirm her safety. In your mind, it was more likely that the two had been placed here to stop you from reaching her than that they'd been deployed to fend off the Goodbye Girls.

"Ah, shit!" one of them grunted, not knowing what to expect. They both had the same following reaction: to jump to the ground and aim their weapons.

They were too late. The sleeping powder was just as effective as Tschau had always assured you it would be; they fell into a slumbering state almost instantly. The only worry was that one would manage to squeeze their trigger before passing out, filling the hallway with gunfire. Rather than allow that to happen, you wrapped your head as fully as you could with your coat, then leaped past the two of them and burst through the doorway into Madison's office. It would have been a move befitting an action movie, if you hadn't had to pull your spy jacket above your head like a kid pretending to be a monster to pull it off without falling asleep.

Inside of the large, London office, decorated with flags from all of the world's nations, Madison Pettigrew was seated behind a huge, oak desk, the kind that made her, as a slender woman, look like an ornamental doll by its size. While she was composed, she wasn't defenseless. You found yourself staring down the barrel of a CEDIT service pistol, similar to your own, which she'd drawn and pointed across the desk in your direction. "Hello again, Mister Speck. I hadn't expected to see you again in London so soon. I apologize that our hospitality has been lacking up to this point, but I see that we're not the only ones who've forgotten our etiquette," the London leader greeted you, wearing a cold smile. "Are you here to handle 'your Girls' or to help me end their mischief?"

You told her you were still their handler and you intended to do your job right.

"Doing your job right involves knocking out my guards and breaking in my door, does it? Pretty foolish, by the way. If that had been locked, you'd have made a fool of yourself." Madison smirked, then rested her non-gun hand upon the desk and crossed the fore-arm beneath the elbow supporting the weapon. "There's a perfectly good situation to resolve over in the tech wing, involving that lovely blond Frenchlady of yours. What are you doing here instead?"

Unintimidated, you stood and adjusted your tie, moving your coat down to its comfortable position. You told her you'd come here to protect her from the real danger; if the Goodbye Girls had come here, unless the tech department had some huge secret cooking that you'd so far managed to stay ignorant of, they'd come for her.

"Me? Why me?" Madison questioned, still with a cool smile. She sounded less confused and more interested to learn what you thought.

That part you hadn't put together yet, but one doesn't become the leader of CEDIT's international coalition without harboring a few skeletons in their closet. You'd learned that everybody who was powerful in CEDIT seemed to have layers of questionable deeds leading to whatever position they'd achieved... with the exception of Pamela Goodby. That one was beyond your explanation. You told her that you were sure there was a thing or two she was still hiding.

Madison sighed, then tilted her eyebrows sympathetically. "Your speculation is amusing, but unwanted. You have two options right now: prove your loyalty and apprehend Au Revoir, or continue to act up and be shot down as part of the group of rogue agents that is currently attacking my branch. Your move, Ciao," she finished, narrowing her eyes slightly as her finger began to squeeze the trigger. It sure didn't seem like she was bluffing... "Shall I count you down? Back slowly towards the door, if you'd rather I stop. Three... two..."

What's your next move?
