Chapter 13

How will you respond to the idea of breaking up the Goodbye Girls?
You disagree and provide your reasoning
You understood the committee's intentions, of course. Having the Goodbye Girls all in one place made for an extremely volatile situation and they were absolutely correct in their fear that CEDIT had no real power over the super-agents. On the other hand, you had numerous reasons to think that splitting up the girls would only make the situation worse. You shook your head and declined the proposal immediately.
Madison kept an even expression, then patiently spoke into her podium's microphone. "Mister Speck, would you like to elaborate on your reasoning for rejecting the committee's decision?" she questioned.
You nodded, then brought your mouth closer to your own desk's receiver to begin listing all of the reasons that the committee needed to reverse that decision of theirs. For starters: the Goodbye Girls are especially gifted women, but those gifts often rely upon their deployment as a team. Take Operation First Plague, for instance. Tschau is an excellent supporter from a high vantage point and provided you all a perfect cover for escape. She wouldn't have been any merit on the ground, navigating the auction. On the other hand, Vaarvel was well-suited for infiltration, but she couldn't have responded from that out-of-area location with the same speed and efficiency that Tschau did. You needed the two of them to cover both bases.
"Noted, Mister Speck. Please continue-"
Milaslava chuckled, then leaned to her own mic. "If I may press the point: you are confident that a team of snipers could not have covered little Amelia's position there? They could have been your eyes in the sky and covered an escape too, couldn't they?"
Again, you shook your head, denying Milaslava's hypothetical answer. You'd been deployed in such teams before and seen the best that CEDIT's agents had to offer, in terms of observation and long-range execution. Nobody had the skills Tschau did and furthermore, none of them had special prosthetics that allowed them to effortlessly descend from the ceiling to the floor in a matter of a second. Without her help, there was a good chance that you, Vaarvel, and Nora Goldstein never would have escaped from the auction alive.
Other missions provided ample evidence as well. Imagine Operation Sleep Mode: what if Tschau had been there to incapacitate the soldiers, but had to handle the robots herself? What if Despedida had full access to the robots below, but had to think of a way to neutralize all of Bortnik's men and the Deliverers on the top floor? That situation had needed a two pronged attack.
"The committee sees your reasoning. Is there anything else you'd like to add?" the London boss spoke up again.
There was one more important point. Your work as a handler had come a long way and had contributed not just to the success of these operations, but also, to reining in the wild, unpredictable behavior of the Goodbye Girls. At the very least, you'd provided more or less constant observation of the team, this time without perishing to unknown sources like your predecessors. You felt that if the Goodbye Girls were split up, they would need four different handlers; training a handler to do the same job you'd executed would be no small feat. In the worst case, those handlers could meet the same ends as your predecessors or their supervision could prove inadequate. You thought the results spoke for themselves: the Goodbye Girls work best as a team under your handling.
"A sound argument," Madison concluded, then refolded her hands upon the desk. "I'd say our discussion here is finished, then. For now, we will move no further with the plan to break apart the Goodbye Girls. Under your advisement, they will stay together with one handler. We may revisit the issue, pending developments going forward. Everyone-- dismissed."
The room was buzzing with conversation, as the world's CEDIT leaders discussed the merits of your counter-argument. Some seemed happy to have the burden of watching over the Goodbye Girls off of the plates of international authorities. Others still seemed to think Washington was trying hoard some kind of weapon for themselves. In particular, you felt Milaslava's coldly smiling gaze fall upon you time and time again. She'd probably been looking forward to getting her hands on one of the Girls.
