Chapter 19 by Sloth013
How goes the Lumberjacking?
I sleep all night and I work all day
It took you two days of tree chopping before you had the required wood for your keep. Luckily, construction was slow. Only the Pebble golem was able to efficiently carve the stone, causing the delay.
Currently, you were stalking through the woods with the Badger and Gnoll, hunting for any animals you could find. So far you had gotten a few rabbits and squirrels, but nothing big like a deer.
Finally, you start your return home. Everything is normal as you traverse the caves. "Looks like we might have to go hunting again tomorrow." You say as the Gnoll opens the door. As soon as you step in to your territory, the Shadow appears in front of you, freaking out. "What's wrong!?" You ask.
The shadow shifts its form until it appears as a humanoid holding a bow. It shifts two more times, each time into a different class. Your eyes widen in shock before you start running towards the Keep. As you get closer, you start to see signs of battle. Scratches in the wall, an arrow on the floor here and there, and scorch marks in dark lines acroos the stone. "Hurry!" You yell to the your group. You go into overdrive as you book it into the last cavern.
There are three heroes facing off against your allies, a ranger, a warrior, and a mage. The warrior was currently pushing back the gorilla beast-kin, with the ranger and mage backing him up. Thistle is off in the back, returning fire every once in a while with a mana bolt. You can't see the rest of the Beast-kin, or the Pebble Golem, leading you to think the worst.
As you ready your weapon the warrior lands a deep blow to the Gorilla's side, causing him to fall to the ground. The warrior stands over the fallen guardian, raising his sword to deal the killing blow.
Running on instinct, you tackle the warrior to the ground, surprising the party. "You dare invade my home?! Try to kill my allies?! You shall die!" You say once your back on your feet. "Attack!" You command. The Gnoll and badger jump into action, the badger attacking the mage and the Gnoll engaging in a fight with the ranger.
"Yazas Vrammagon, the Silver Brigand, you are to be captured and brought to justice for your crimes against Utnop." The warrior says having picked himself up.
"Then you shall have to bring them my body." You stab with your spear, only to be parried by his longsword. He pushes your spear to the side and shoulder checks you, pushing you back a few feet. He swings his sword and leaves a gash on your neck after you tried to dodge. Any slower and you wouldn't have a head. This hero is much more skilled than Achion, that's for sure.
You don't waste any time and light your spear on fire, setting it to burn. The swordsman eyes you a bit warily, unsure of the properties of your spear. You whirl it around your head and back before slamming it into the side of his sword, pushing him back a few inches. He grimaces, the heat from your moonfire obviously causing him discomfort.
He pushes your spear back and goes for an over head chop but you dodge out of the way this time before quickly stabbing him in the arm. It hits something on his arm and slides off him, chainmail. Luckily, you see your doing a bit of damage even when your not hitting him. You must have heated the metal enough to cause delayed damage. He goes for another heavy blow but misses once more.
He jumps back and quickly sheaths his long sword and pulls out two shortswords, eager for the boost in speed. He charges you and swings wide with his left hand, being stopped by your spear, but with his right sword he lands a large gash on you leg. You push his sword off, off balanacing him, and snap the spear back, cold cocking him right in the face.
He goes to do a double diagonal slash, but is caught by a vine around his leg. It's Thistle! You had forgotten she was here. She must have been helping the others fight. You land another blow on him, this time in the side. The swordsman swings one of his swords at you, parrying your next attack. At the same time he cuts himself loose and jumps back a few feet, looking around.
"It's not over Yazas. We shall return." He says before pulling out a strange stick and breaking it between his fingers. Instantly he is surrounded in smoke before he disappears in a flash of light.
You run over to the Gorilla man and kneel down besides him. Placing your ear on his chest you let out a breath you didn't know you had been holding when you hear a heart beat. You pull out one of your health potions and put it to his lips, helping him drink the restorative.
After a moment, his wound glows a faint red and stitches itself back together. Now that he's stabilized, you turn to the rest of the group. "Is anyone else injured?" You ask. Thistle steps forward, revealing a nasty cut on her shoulder. You give her the rest of the potion, healing her before you ask her anything else. "Where are the others?" You ask.
"Safe. The minute your Shadow came to us I had them hide at the bottom of the pit with the Golem protecting them. We had met the heroes half way in order to give them time, but they pushed us back here." Thistle explains.
"That's good then. We didn't loose anyone like i had hoped." You say relieved. The Gnoll walks up to you and hands you two loot bags.

"Huh, meditation. I kinda remember that now." You say. Indeed, memories of your parents resting for an hour or so at a time before continuing on with what they were doing passed through your mind. "I wish I just remembered all this shit." You mutter as Thistle returns with the younger group in tow.
"Are you all okay?" You ask. They are a bit shaken up but overall okay. Seeing as they are fine you turn to the Pebble Golem to revamp it's orders. As you speak you catch the Fox girl giving you lingering looks every now and again out of the corner of your eye. As you finish you decide to approach her.
"Are you okay?" You ask once more.
"Fine. Physically. I just sort of... froze when the Shadow appeared and we took off to hid. I didn't do much after that either, I just threw up an illusion of the wall behind us." She says.
"That's actually pretty smart." You compliment.
"Not when it's the only thing you can do." She argued.
"I see. Then you feel useless." You say rubbing your chin. "What about this then?" You say handing her the bow.
"A bow? I've never used one." She admits.
"Neither have I. But with your knowledge of poisons it might do you good." You point out.
"But what if I'm fighting up close?" She asks.
"Well I imagine a well placed swing will cause some damage. But if your really concerned, take these too." You say handing her 5 of your throwing knives. "Short and long range. But for now I would focus on the bow."
"Is that an order, my lord?" She asks in a sort of half sarcastic half actually a question sort of way.
"It's a suggestion. You ultimately are your own person. You just live here. The most i could do would be to throw you out of my territory, but you've not done anything warranting that." You explain.
"Well... you have my permission to, ahem, punish me, if i ever am... disrespectful." She smirks before walking over to the Gnoll. As she walks you notice a bit more sway in her step, causing you to let out a small groan.
After calming yourself down, you decide to take a some action to help prepare yourself for any more unwanted visitors. After all, now that your lair's location has been discovered, it's only a matter of time before more adventurers appear.
You start by summoning up another Pebble Golem and have it start working along side the other one, doubling the construction speed. That takes a hundred and fifty out of your fame.
Next you buy another level of Leigelord taking your fame down another twenty. Finally, you approach the Gnoll.
"Gnoll." You say, gaining his attention. He looked up from his deer leg, giving you a bit of a wild look. "Peace pack mate." You say getting his attention. "You've been under my domain for a while now, and I think it's time I paid you back." You say.
"What does pointy eared one mean?" He says with a calculating look in his eye.
"I'm going to make you my champion. This will allow you to retain any levels you have gained and respawn in my territory." You explain.
"Get stronger?" He askes.
"Indeed. Ynn." You say. He tilts his head, confused.
"What is Ynn?" He asks.
"You are. You've been without a name for long enough." You say to the now dubbed Ynn. He looks at you for a moment before letting out a laugh.
Bestow title of Champion to Ynn? Y/N?
"Yes."
Ynn glowed silver for a moment before the light died down, seemingly the same.
"Do you feel any different?" You ask.
"Hm... the same." He says as he moves his body around. You nod before motioning him closer.
"It seems a bounty has been placed on my head." You say pulling out the poster. The image is a close up of your face, moonfire giving a dramatic shadow effect. The image is quite realistic, like looking into a mirror. "Yazas Vrammagon, the Silver Brigand. Wanted for the crimes of theft, assult, prison break, and ****. 4 Gold pieces alive, 1 Gold piece dead." You read off.
"Shit." The Gnoll summarises.
"My thoughts exactly." You say dryly. "But since I respawn here, how would I be brought in dead?" You question.
"Magic?" Ynn suggesests.
"Perhaps. In any case, we need to finish construction and construct more tunnels. Maybe even explore more of the Hollow Path, see if there is any hunting ground down here." You say rubbing your chin.
"Tomorrow, take the Badger and fox girl hunting. It will be a good experience for her. Get as many pelts as you can, and avoid any heroes. We don't want a repeat of today." You say. Ynn nods, allowing you to dismiss him. With that finished you take a seat by the fire pit and pull out your new magic tome.
An introductory to runic magic and it's uses
"Runic magic? I don't believe I've heard of it before. Hopefully it's worth the read." You say before opening the book.
"Runic sequences, rune crafting, or runic magic is an obscure branch of magic that is often overlooked by most mage's. But, in the studied, runic magic can be one of the most powerful, and versatile. This book will set you on the course to learning the delicate art of rune crafting, and it's large range of uses."
You raise your eyebrow at the introduction.
For the next hour, you read the book, becoming more interested as you go. When you finish, your mind is full of information on runes. As you put the book into your inventory, you notice a blinking light on your stats page.
