Chapter 5

Are you going to buy some witch stuff?
Obviously, Buy witchcraft material.
After a quick internet search to see where any places were selling witchcraft things nearby, you grab your purse and head out. It’s not far, under ten blocks, so you decide to walk rather than take the free public transit afforded you by your college tuition. It’s a nice morning, and though the calendar claims it has been Fall for months, only now are the effects of Autumn showing themselves. The leaves of the scant trees surrounded by a concrete jungle have begun changing from green to orange, many currently in the odd middle ground of yellow. There’s a crispness to the air that you don’t remember being there just a few days ago.
There’s something else, too. Usually, when you go outside, whether for class or shopping, you try to keep your head down, keep to yourself. It’s not that you’re shy, exactly, you just feel a bit self-conscious. With your reading glasses and long thick hair, you have a bit of a geeky appearance, regardless of how geeky you actually may or may not be.
But right now, you don’t feel the need to keep your head down. Instead, you walk down the street with your head held high, meeting the gaze of anyone looking at you with ease. In no time you’ve reached the store, Moyle’s Apothecary. Inside is a woman standing behind the counter who looks like the ideal image of someone’s favorite aunt. She’s wearing comfortable clothes, overalls and a sweater, and appears as though she could be anywhere between thirty and sixty. She smiles at you as you enter and asks, “Hello, there. I haven’t seen you here before, would you like any help?”
You appreciate the offer, but you shake your head. “No, I know what I’m looking for, but thank you.” You’re feeling very sure of yourself, you know exactly what you need. You move easily through the store, grabbing candles, herbs, and many other tools of witchcraft you’ve read about for your class. It comes up to a hefty sum at the register, but you find it hard to care about that, happily handing over the money.
The walk back to your apartment is going great, when you remember that you haven’t clicked on the Task on the app yet. You decide to just do it when you get back to the apartment, but as you continue to walk, you feel this nagging sensation telling you to just go ahead and click on the Task, sooner rather than later. Annoyed, you pull your phone out of your purse and do what that compulsion is telling you, then stuff your phone back into your purse without even looking at the results.
Confidence 2->3
Magic 2->3
Humanity 28->25
Once you get back to my apartment, you take out all the stuff you bought. You don’t have a lot of space in your room, so you decide to clean off the top of your wooden dresser and organize what you bought there. After doing that, you realize all of the stuff together almost looks like a witch’s shrine. The revelation makes you smile, and you have to resist from letting out a witch-like cackle. Instead, you let out a happy breath of air. Man, you were really full of energy, huh? This app has certainly taken your day in a fun direction. You check to see what Task replaced the one you just finished, and it’s a doozy: Cast a spell.
Are you going to really try and cast a spell?
