Confusing

"Thank you for coming to see me." Principal Conner was a fortyish woman who carried a few extra pounds but was nicely dressed with a decent figure... if a little small in the chest department. The streak of blue in her hair was probably intended to make her cool. Matt didn't think it was working but wouldn't criticize anyone's attempt to better themselves. After all, that was what he was doing, too.

"We didn't have much choice." Karen was normally the voice of reason. Matt didn't think antagonizing the principal was a great start.

"Yes, of course. The reason I called you here was a report that you've become a disruptive influence in our school."

She paused as if waiting for Matt to defend himself.

He didn't intend to break the silence but she was better at this game than he was... she probably got a lot more practice. "Uh, I'm not sure how that's possible. We've only been here for a few weeks, we've passed all of our tests so far, and we pretty much just come to school, sit in our classes, then go home."

"Dr. Dyle says otherwise."

"Dr. Dyle is a bigot," Karen said. "Even though he's a biology teacher who should know better, he's got the whole eugenics attitude."

"Shhh." Matt didn't know what to do, exactly, but attacking a teacher was probably not the right approach.

"That is ridiculous and you know it," Dr. Conner said.

"Actually, he said poor people should be sterilized to improve the breeding stock," Karen said. "So, pretty much no, I don't think it's ridiculous."

"He said much the same to me." Matt hadn't wanted to go there but since Karen had, he wasn't going to hide the truth.

"That's difficult for me to believe," the principal said.

"Yeah, it was hard for me to believe also," Matt fired back. "It was also hard to listen to. My family is working their tails off so that we can afford a really cruddy little apartment here to let us go to a decent school. I wasn't surprised that the kids were mean about it. I mean, they've mostly grown up rich and entitled, never having to worry about making the rent or whether they could afford a new pair of jeans to go to school in. But I really thought the teachers would be different. They didn't grow up here. I don't think many of them went to Harvard or wherever rich kids go. So, to hear him say my sister and I should never have been allowed to be born was... distressing."

"All this is very interesting," Conner said, "but Dr. Dyle tells me that you're practicing pornography."

"What? Here on the school grounds? That's absurd. We would never do that."

"Obviously not at school."

"Ah-ha. You mean there are rumors of us doing something off school grounds and not during school hours. Assuming that's true, does it violate school rules?"

"Obviously we can't have students practicing pornography."

"Really?" Karen asked. "Just so I understand, why is it any business of the school at all... assuming that the consenting adult students were engaged in legal activities and not on school grounds?"
