Chapter 17

What is it?
A scene of death and destruction back in Gotham.
"When you say downstairs, I take it you mean the cave?" Bruce asked. Alfred nodded gravely. Judging from his expression, it must be bad, Bruce noted. Taking a few moments to throw on some proper clothing, Bruce and his faithful servant made for the cave.
Alfred had already brought up the pertinent information on the Batcomputer. GCPD footage. When the sun prevented Batman from going out, Bruce's surveillance of the police brought the crime to him.
Bodycam footage, radio chatter, even a drone surveying the carnage from the air gave him a full picture of the carnage. One of Two-Face's strongholds, one Bruce had earmarked to demolish in one of the coming nights had been raided. Of course, judging by the police feed, it looked more like it had been bombed. Walls demolished, crooks torn apart. Yet the careful confiscation of every last bit of money, narcotics, explosives, they all pointed to a more focused operative that someone like the Joker.
"If not for the collateral damage, I'd applaud this man for doing your job for you. Rather considerate, with you... otherwise engaged. Unfortunately, Mr. Dent was elsewhere, and remains at large."
Bruce ignored the butler's comments. He knew, despite what he might say, Alfred approved of and believed in his mission. His encouragement for Bruce to take up more... permanent measures at the beginning of his career had been solely out of concern for his life. Touching, if unneccesary. Bruce knew he could handle anything the city's criminals could throw at him.
"Wait... Alfred, rewind camera three and pause." Bruce said. "Look at that" He insisted, pointing at a fallen criminal. The poor bastard had been crushed, taking out by a chunk of concrete, only it looked to have come from much farther away than an explosion would normally propel it.
"It would seem that gentlemen met his end rather... violently. That rubble, it must've been thrown, yes? The amount of strength required for that. There's only one criminal we've encountered capable of such things."
"Bane. He's back in Gotham." Bruce said.
"I've... dreaded this day for quite some time." Alfred said gravely. "The last time you and that brute squared off, you barely walked away with your life."
Alfred was right. As a pure physical and cerebral threat, Bane was head and shoulders above most of Gotham's supercriminals. Even despite all his research, Bruce had been taken aback by just how massively the Venom compound increased Bane's power.
Stopping him as soon as possible was his top priority. It was only a matter of time before Bane hurt more innocents.
"I want leads, Alfred." Bruce said, rising to his feet. "Get me his hideout, or whatever he's planning, by the time the sun sets."
"I will endeavour to do so, Master Bruce." Alfred nodded. "May I enquire what you'll do in the meantime?"
"I have business, in the city." Bruce stated.
What business?
