Chapter 22 by GreenBean GreenBean

Agree to the shortcut?

Agree

Despite her fatigue, Jessica agreed to the shortcut. The Crow nodded, her beak-mask bobbing with the motion. As they strode, the crow filled her in on the plan. Apparently there were many ledges where a team of two could lift and pull one another up the height with relative ease. Since Jessica was the weaker of the two, she would boost the Crow up first, who would then pull her up by her arms over the ledge. Before the Crow could finish elaborating the finer points of the plan, the sounds of barking filled the air.

Dogs breeding had become a recent pastime of many yharnamites, as many hunters preferred the noble beast's aid on the hunt, and offered many others a modicum of relief to have them safeguard their children as a pair were often a match for a common beast. They even took the blood well.
The barking only grew louder, and the source soon became even more apparent, with a dozen iron cages holding the things lining the street. Many rattled their cages, as they pushed, bit, and barked at them as if they were beasts themselves. Passing between them, the dogs began to throw themselves against the doors, as if it would lock could give any moment.

"WELL. HERE WE ARE. COME ON NOW, TAKE THE POSITION" the Crow shouted at her. Jessica bent her knees and cupped her hands together, forming a step for the crow to step on, as she had been instructed. Jessica felt a wave of self-consciousness, as there was no way the tatters of her clothes were affording her much coverage in such a position. At least one thigh was fully bared and her midriff visible. But here in the presence of dogs and the Crow she didn't feel as exposed to their gaze, but exposed to their fangs instead. The barking worsened, becoming a din all around them.

The Crow walked a few paces from her and held up her hand. Three fingers. Jessica could see behind her one particular dog, with all white fur growing in dense clumps all over it. This particular dog had is jaw locked onto the door, muscles pulled tense, and she could swear she could hear the metal groan. Two fingers. The corner of the dog's door pulled in, and Jessica felt her eyes grow wide. One finger. The dog released and reeled back in the small space of its cage. The crow broke into a short run, Jessica braced herself, holding the step her hands formed in front of her. The Crow took a large running step into her hands, and Jessica grunted with effort, but her bruised body straining, but the strength of the pose worked, and Jessica found she was even able to boost her ally up into the air like a proper crow, disappearing over the ledge.
Jessica brought her gaze back in front of her. The white dog's cage lay in plain view, the cage door swinging outward from unseen momentum. The barking of the dogs all around her unceasing, Jessica broke into a cold sweat. She couldn't see the dog. Where was the dog?

What next?
