You cannot stand to see your people suffer for your mistake. Or your fellow dragons for that matter. After talking to Alisa you decide the best cause of action is to apologize to the king. You visit his castle and plan on becoming human before approaching to seem less intimidating and more vulnerable. However, before you get close enough to land and transform a ballista bolt whistles through the air and rips through your left wing. You crash into the ground.

Injured, bleeding badly and unable to fly you run back towards Candlestone as more bolts wizz through the air towards you, one gets lodged in your tail as you flee. The next day you stagger into your castle having travelled through the night. Alisa rushes down to meet you. She tends to your wounds and asks you how you got them. You explain that her husband opened fire on you as you approached the castle.

As you recovered from your wounds, things got worse for the kingdom overall. You sent a human envoy to try and find out why you were shot and the king imprisoned them claiming they were spies and assassins sent to kill him and steal away the prince. You knew this to be a lie but since you still needed to recover let it be for now. The king started raising taxes on all kinds of things not just related to Candlestone. You did what you could to help the humans you ruled over, however, the more you helped the more the king made things worse. Rumours reached you that he was going mad or acting paranoid. More rumours showed that many people would prefer you as king over him as you were kind and had the favour of the Queen.

You eventually did send spies into his castle after the king arrested and eventually executed an official envoy. You find out that the King was intimidated by your power and popularity. The other kingdoms mocked him for letting a dragon run loose in his kingdom and not for slaying you when he claimed the princess. The other kingdoms had put pressure on him though restricting trade until he did something to comply with their traditions and values. This had been the cause but now the king seemed corrupted and paranoid. He had passed laws against his people and met with no opposition and had continued to push his boundaries. He had seen how the ballistas had turned you away and seen that as a sign that he could control you and do whatever he wanted.

It took 3 months of tyranny but eventually, you were healed up. Some other the other lords had mentioned civil war to remove the king from power. You wanted one last chance to speak to your old friend before you resorted to such drastic measures.
