Hudds

It was Hudds, the young undersergeant. Standing in the doorway, framed by the faint lamplight of the corridor beyond, Riolta recognised his tall, if slender frame.

‘You really should lock your door, miss,’ Hudds replied. ‘The beast wouldn’t knock either.’

Hudds laughed sharply. ‘Hardly, miss. I’ve been sent to guard you.’

Now Riolta let her guard down, and laughed back at the young man. ‘You’ve been sent to guard me? That’s a good one. I could pierce both your balls with an arrow before you could blink!’

Hudds gulped, obviously a little put out by Riolta’s frank assessment of his capabilities. ‘Redmond send me,’ he protested, ‘he said he thought it would be a good idea if you had a guard. He’s answerable for your safety.’

Riolta couldn’t help but think that to send Hudds would have been Redmond’s little joke. After all, if he were going to send a guard, why not the hulking Harold? Perhaps, she reasoned, he suspected that she might get on a little to well with the diffident guardsman.
