Tell Joanna that she was deliberately targeted by two mobsters and that you and Ray fought them to the but Ray died in the process

"Two mobsters came into your apartment targeting you," you inform her. "Ray tried to fight them off and when I heard what was going on I joined in. Between the two of us we killed them both. But..."

Joanna's face looks like it's about to crumble. "But... what, Mark?"

"Ray..." you say slowly. "He... didn't make it. And before we could stop them, one of the mobsters stabbed you with a knife. After it was all over, I brought you here and stitched you up."

"Ray is... dead?" Joanna whimpers, her voice wavering.

"He died... trying to save you," you tell her. Joanna can't hold her emotions in check any longer and bursts into tears. You wrap your arms around her as she cries into your chest. Finally, she is cried out and she puts her arms tremblingly around you, with her head still resting against your chest.

The door opens and a policeman walks in. He takes one look at the scene and makes a snap decision. "I was going to ask for your statements, but that can wait," he says. "Come on down to the station tomorrow. My card." He turns and leaves, locking the door behind him.
