What do they do next?
Go home?
"They haven't charged her and we can't get a judge to set bail until they charge her and we can't habeas corpus for another day or so," Eliza said. "So, I suggest we go home, get some sleep, and reassemble tomorrow to spring her."
"What will they do to her overnight?" Usha demanded.
"Good question. I don't think they'll do anything but who knows?"
Rick felt sick about leaving Kat alone but agreed that just sitting in the police station wasn't going to get them anywhere. "Want to take me back to the gym, then, Usha?"
Before Usha could answer, Eliza interrupted. "I need to talk to you anyway, Rick. So why don't I run you back home?"
He shrugged. Thanks, Eliza.
"I'll meet you here tomorrow morning at eight," Usha said. "One of my yoga clients is a judge. I'll talk to her tonight if I get anything I'll call you."
"You could have mentioned that earlier."
"Yeah, I could have thought of it earlier, too. I'm doing the best I can all right." Tears bubbled down her face.
Nice work, Rick, he told himself. _Make the pretty girl cry. _He gathered her in a hug and held on while she sobbed. "Kat and I have been planning our gym for years and it finally happens and then all this shit dumps on us. It isn't fair."
"You're right, it isn't fair. And we're going to straighten it out. I promise." How, exactly, he'd keep that promise he had no idea.
After a few minutes, Usha got embarrassed by her tears, pulled herself together, gave Rick a kiss on the lips, and headed for her car.
"I'm staying at the gym these days," Rick told Eliza. "You can drop me off there if you don't mind."
"No problem. I need to talk to you anyway."
He got in the passenger side while she started the car and backed up from the police station parking lot. "You aren't going to thank me for saving you from Asian Woman drivers."
He looked at her. "Prejudiced much."
"Trying to lighten the mood."
"Well, I will thank you for dropping whatever you were doing and coming to help out."
"I was on a date."
"Oh. Sorry."
"No problem. So, are you and my sister getting back together?"
"Oh. That's what you wanted to talk to me about?"
"Just part of it."
"No, we're not getting back together. We're sort of creating a friendship of sorts.... Hey, this isn't the way to the gym."
"Nope. We have business to take care of first."
