Chapter 4 by realizingworlds realizingworlds

What happens now?

You call it a day and head home

Fishing isn't always the most effective way to get your dinner and you finally pack it in after a few hours of disappointment. Thankfully you have other food stored away, but you really had been hoping for a good, fresh catch. You probably won't be able to fish for a few more days after this; you need to gather firewood for the upcoming winter, check on your small animals traps, and head into town for some supplies before you can think about heading down to the river again.

You trek your way back to the cabin, giving a sigh of relief when you finally catch sight of it. Honestly, you had been lucky to even get the old thing. It was beautiful despite the wear and tear, two stories with three bedrooms. The man you got it from had been planning on tearing it down, but sold it to you when he realized he got more out the offer than his original plan. You've spent the last five years slowly fixing it up. The main floor is pretty much complete with a working kitchen, a decent bathroom, a living/dining area, and your bedroom. You started working on the two upstairs bedrooms once you replaced the roof last year and they're coming along nicely, though you doubt they'll see a lot of use. You don't have a lot of friends up here and you don't trust anyone of them to give you the family you've secretly been dreaming of. But you work on them anyways, maybe you'll find another use for them.

You take off all your fishing gear and head into the kitchen, sighing as you go over your near barren cupboards. Yeah, you're definitely going to head into town tomorrow. You're savings will take a hit, but you rather not starve, especially if your hunts end up like today.

You find some preserved meat from your last deer and set about making your dinner. Just as you go to take it off the stove, you hear knocking at the door. Who in the world could be at your house? Your neighbors are miles away and you doubt anyone would swing by without giving you a day's warning, knowing how busy you are...

Who is at the door?
