Week 5, Day 6 - Grace and Maria

For the past few days, I’ve tried to locate a weapon. Adam cleared all the drawers in the kitchen of knives and anything dangerous. At night he locked his door. It had been three days so far. The girls committed to coming into the room and drinking the untainted water, I’ve watched them all carefully, and none had taken any of the water Adam had given them.

A thought occurred to me, why Adam didn’t seem to be angry or mad that none of us were drinking the water.

I’ve missed James. I thought. I wanted to hold him now and make love to him. He was probably scavenging for supplies. He and Todd said they would come back within eight days, spending that time scavenging. I told them by then we would take over the shelter and I would do unspeakable things to Adam to get him to open the door. The girls were wearing a lot more conservative clothes I’ve noticed. The girls were wearing pants now.

I eyed Adam suspiciously as he approached my daughter and made light conversation. Maria smiled at that creep as they talked. I waddled over, my huge sack still weighing me down.

“Maria, go to your room,” I said to her, and Maria looked sullen and went.

Adam smiled at me when I sat down. “Grace, may I say you look beautiful even though you are so very pregnant.”

I felt hot. I looked away from Adam. “Adam, please do not talk to my daughter like that.”

“Grace, I wanted to get to know her that’s all. I want to get to know you too,” Adam said.

It’s hot in here. It must be it. He’s turning up the temperature.

“I have a husband,” I said.

“Oh, I meant none offense Grace. I meant strictly friendly getting to know, sorry for the confusion.” Adam said, and Adam got up and walked away.

I got up steamed and tried to storm off to my room. I withdrew the straw tube from my belly and sucked. My mouth was dry as hell. There was still plenty of untainted water left. We would survive this.
