Chapter 14 by reaper13
What do you do while waiting until noon?
Spend time organizing your province
You decide to meet with Talith in your temporary office. With you being a Duke now, that means you now own a Duchy. But not for the people in there to worship and praise you. Only foolish nobles would presume that is how it works. You at least know you’re simply governing this region in place of your king. In order to properly do that you need Counts, lower nobles who answer to you. Preferably ones that you can trust. Of the four counties in your duchy, you decide to have one county for your own, the one you are currently in. You do require some personal territory, after all. The Nobly family who used to own it was aligned with your enemy and has fled the kingdom. This means they have lost any claim on this title. Hence, it is yours now. This saves you the effort of wrangling it out of them.
A second Count has chosen to fight your king until the very end of the war, when he was captured and imprisoned. He is considered too much of a loyalist to the previous king. It should be easy to have his title usurped. You can then hand that title to Sariel, a powerful demoness you summoned to serve as your second in command during the war.
The third county used to be controlled by a strong opponent during the war, but he died when his mansion was taken over. That means his title passed on to his only child, a daughter of 21 years old. You may want to keep her around, IF she can prove she is loyal to you.
The last county is currently controlled by a lord that decided to surrender to you as soon as your army threatened his county. It saved many lives of the people living under him. But if he can switch allegiance so quickly before, he can easily do it again. If he is such a coward, maybe you can use that against him and fear him into being loyal to you.
You and Talith go over many problems and solutions and before you know it, it is nearly noon. You send your concubine off to take care of the paperwork and informing the different Counts and prospective Counts of your decisions. You instead head over to the refectory to have another meal with your prisoners.
When you enter the refectory, all the nuns are already there. They are seated at an empty table, waiting for you. Well, actually they are waiting for the food. But the food will only be brought after your arrival. So, they have **** but to wait for you.
As soon as you arrive the imp servants head to the kitchen to gather the food. Soon after the imps return with several plates. For the nuns, there is bread, jam, vegetables and water. For you, a plate full of tasty pastries. A small Danish, small Berliner, a Sweet Baguette, …
Miryam stares at the difference between your plate and hers with shock and disbelief.
“Why do we suddenly get food different from yours?” the redhaired nun asks.
“In an attempt to show you I have respect for your religious choice, I’ve been studying up on some of the practices your religion promotes.” You tell her as you grab a Berliner. “Turns out that temperance is one of them. So, when I first provided you lots of fancy food, I did it as a form of kindness. But then it turns out this kindness I offer is in direct contrast to one of the values you have vowed to keep. I was outright offended at myself when I discovered this. So, I’ve decided to no longer try to seduce you away from your vows, though it being entirely accidental, and instead help you with maintaining your virtue and keep you away from gluttony.”
You then take a slow bite from the Berliner, allowing the yellow cream inside to spill from it, while looking into Miryam’s eyes.
As Miryam stares at you in disbelief, Angelica speaks up and says, “I think that’s very respectful of you. We should maintain our virtues even in these times. Thank you for this.”
When even one of her friends is in support of this, there is nothing Miryam can do but sigh and accept this has become the new norm.
During the meal, you decide to ask them more questions about their religion, even though you already know a lot about the topic. It’s to really sell that I-really-care-so-much-about-your-religion act.
Interestingly, it is Angelica who answers most of your questions. Eventually even asking you to join them in their virtue of temperance. You instead tell her that while you respect her religion and its practices, you do not prescribe to this religion nor do you share its values. Perhaps she thought she could convert you to her side. If anything, you’re just trying to find a hole in her defenses. See which strings you can pull or what buttons to push. You quickly realize for Angelica gluttony isn’t it. Yesterday she was already fine limiting herself to just the vegetarian food. Now she is partaking in the food without complaints. Neither are Siara and Jennifer. Miryam on the other hand is the person who has the most issues with it. She seems to barely have an appetite and generally just eats a bit of bread. You do make notice of Miryam’s eyes seeming glued to your plate throughout the meal. You notice her stare at each of your pastries. Especially the Danish and the Sweet Baguette.
While you’re in the middle of conversation, your phone suddenly goes off. You check who it is and find out it is your second in command. This is a call you better not miss.
“I’m sorry. I need to take this.” You apologize to Angelica.
You get up from your chair and take a few steps away from the table.
Then you accept the call, put the phone next to your ear and immediately hear, “Hello, John? Are you hearing me? Is this thing even on?”
“Yes, Sariel. I’m hearing you. I see you’re still getting used to our modern technology?” You say jokingly.
“It’s been 200 years since I’ve last been on this world!” Sariel complains. “Back then the most advanced way of sending messages was putting beeps into a wire. Since then you pulled the beeping machine off the table, ripped the cord out, slapped a mirror on it and made said mirror conjure up moving images. YES, I have difficulty keeping up.”
That’s what happens to higher demons. Summoning them is both difficult and dangerous as they are the most likely to lash out at the summoner. As a result, they are summoned the fewest and have the least amount of experience with the human world.
“So, what are you calling for?” You ask.
“I got a message from that succubus slut of yours. Apparently, you plan for me to be a Countess under you. What … the flying … fuck! I am a freaking HIGH demon! A veritable princess of hell! I ought to be a queen amongst you mortals! Yes, your king is already married. Yes, I know you’re just a duke so you can’t make me queen. But the least you can do is take me as your duchess!”
“Sariel,” You sigh. “With current technology a countess by today’s standards can live a more luxurious lifestyle than an empress 200 years ago.”
“… They do?” Sariel asks.
“Besides, the higher the rank of your nobility, the more work you are expected to put into politics. A lower rank allows you to spend more time on yourself and less on your work. Also, with me as your Duke, I can make it so you are left with as much independence as possible. Really, I’m offering you the most luxurious lifestyle you can possible get under the circumstances.”
For a moment it is silent on the other side of the phone. Sariel must be thinking it over. In the meantime, the nuns leave the table and head towards the door.
Siara takes the time to walk up to you and says, “We have tasks to perform. We’ll be going now.”
You nod your approval and watch them leave.
“How about you start by spending some time in our world as a Countess and use that time to familiarize yourself with our technology. After that, you can still climb the ranks and become a Duchess if you like.”
“Ugh, fine then.” Sariel groans. Even now you can imagine her rolling her eyes. “But you better be right about this. So, how do you turn device off?”
You smile and say, “Try pressing the red button.”
“You mean this one?” Sariel asks, after which the call ends.
You honestly can’t say you’re surprised at her reaction. In the demon world most demons are just spirits.
Lesser demons are entirely spiritual energy and can’t interact with anything. They can’t feel or sense anything at all. That’s why they love being summoned to the human world. They get to feel, both pain and pleasure. Taste, both sweetness and bitterness. That’s why these lesser demons basically worship you. You’re making their greatest dreams come true.
Greater demons like Talith have some access to their senses, but everything they experience feels sedated. They can interact with the demon world a little, but summoning them grants them access to a level of sense, interaction and experience they are otherwise unable to attain.
Higher demons have the most access to their senses and the greatest level of interactivity with the demon world. Generally, these demons are fine with being where they are. They have carved out entire palaces for themselves and are annoyed when they are taken away from there. If you summon them, you need to make it worth their time. If you don’t, they may as well feel so insulted they end up killing you over it.
When your father was summoned, he was indeed upset over it. But when he learned he could use it to have a fee fuck with your mother and then go back home without having to do anything over it, he was quite pleased.
When Sariel learned she could permanently stay in this technologically advanced place, with increased sensory input, she was more intrigued instead. But to have her as your Duchess? She’s definitely a sexy woman and you wouldn’t mind doing the nasty with her. But she is such a proud woman you doubt she would let a half breed like yourself touch her. On the bright side, she’d probably let you have a couple of concubines. Probably best to keep her as a Countess for now. Perhaps, if you play your cards right. You might yet get to have your way with her. Though you’ll probably have to trick her into thinking it’ she who has her way with you.
Do you return to managing your Counts or do you do something else?
