Chapter 10 by VagueJester
How do you reply?
Appeal to her sympathy
You decide to try and make her understand the torment you and your fellow monsters went through at the hands of her fellow heroes.
"My entire existence consisted of little more than a cycle of life and ****," you explain, having no trouble revealing some of the pain you've gone through in your tone. "When I was first created, I was much like that little fellow there." You point to the shadow wisp, who has been slowly going around the room, collecting cobwebs and depositing them on the crafting table. Meanwhile, you've been idly using the shadows to slowly chip away at the rock floor in front of your door, making sure that the mana you expend between it and holding your prisoner doesn't exceed your regeneration.
"If that's the case, how could you possibly end up here?" She asks skeptically.
"Simple luck," you confess. "I happened upon that barbaric friend of yours as he was drunkenly stumbling across a bridge and managed to cause him to fall off. When he died, my power grew and my form changed. I was so happy. Finally, I wouldn't have to exist solely to be exterminated by heroes without a second thought."
You continue to regale your captive with the tale of your growth, omitting the appearance of your mysterious benefactor, while making sure to put plenty of emphasis on your desire for more out of life than just waiting for ****. As you speak, you gather the stone from your digging and return it to the crafting table, where you use it to create a pitfall, which you connect to your tripwire and log trap so that any unsuspecting hero who manages to get past it will be knocked down by the log. With that done, you use the remaining stone to create a furnace, which you place right next to the table.
"So that's why the undead paladin isn't here anymore," the priestess concludes as you finish your tale.
"That's correct," you reply. "I needed a safe place deeper in the dungeon, and the boss room gives me the opportunity to prepare for the inevitable heroes who will hunt me."
"But why stay here in the first place?" She asks. "If you really want to live for yourself, why not run away? See the world?"
"You really think that your goddess would let something like me live?" You reply sardonically. "Before I changed, I existed solely to be killed so that you heroes could 'prove your devotion to the light'. If I escaped to the surface, Anari would detect me the moment the smallest glimmer of sunlight touched me and send heroes after me. At least down here, I can evade her gaze for a while, and not have to hide from the light."
"So, you'll just live here forever?" She asks.
"What other choice do I have?" You reply miserably, failing to mention your plans of making use of the dungeon as a controlled way of growing in strength. "At least while I'm confined to this room, I'll return in this form when I'm killed. If I were to die even a foot beyond that door, I'd be turned back into another wisp, and be **** to return to an existence of living as cannon fodder."
You slouch your shoulders and sigh dramatically as you watch the priestess wrestle with her doubts out of the corner of your eye.
"That doesn't seem fair," she mumbles to herself.
"It's the way the world under Anari and the other gods works," You reply with a defeated tone before turning away as if talking to yourself. "At least I can craft some things in here. I just wish I had some friends, or someone to keep me company. Heck, I'd settle for a plant."
"I. . . I admit that I'm feeling a little confused," the priestess replies. "I've never considered monsters having any sort of sentience while fighting them."
"Near as I can tell, they don't," You reply. "My situation seems to be particularly. . . unique."
"In that case," the priestess says uncertainly. "How about you and I make a. . . deal, of sorts?"
"What do you propose?" You answer skeptically, smirking on the inside. A few sad words and you've already turned the girl from mindless hatred of you for just existing, to cautious pity for the poor self-aware monster **** into circumstances beyond his control.
"My situation is also. . . unique, compared to other players. I'm not really able to leave this area either, and I can't go much farther than the temple, because I'm not a great fighter. Also, as you get stronger, word of you will spread, and more people are going to want to bring a priest in their party to make fighting you even easier. If you promise to protect me whenever I come here, I'll stay out of any fights when I have to accompany a party down here."
You consider her offer for a moment. You're curious as to what circumstances would trap a player in an area like she is, but have a sneaking suspicion that it's linked to her membership at the temple. She has a point that you will encounter more priests and clerics as you grow in strength and heroes seek to exploit your weaknesses, so if she stays out of the fights whenever she escorts a group to you, then that will make your life that much easier.
"Why do you want my protection?" You ask.
"These tunnels are supposed to span the entire continent," she replies. "I want to explore them and see what they hold before anyone else."
How fortunate, her desire lines up with one of yours. You smile widely and release her restraints as you reach out your hand to her. "Deal."
The priestess shakes your hand, and you hear a chime in the back of your head. You open your stat screen and make sure to remain composed as you read its latest update.

Game Monster
From Creep to Boss
You come into being as a low-level monster, the kind heroes chew through like popcorn. You know the drill, whether you're a player yourself or an artificial intelligence, and you're sick of it. You set out on your own quest: to defeat the heroes at any cost (or at least be an epic boss somewhere down the line).
