How does her day go?
A Case of Mistaken Gender
I had to meet a friend at the mall for some shopping, so leaving in a hurry I put on a hand-me-down Star Wars shirt that was a few sizes too big for me and some jeans, I didn't even have time to look for a bra or put on the bare minimum amount of makeup I bother to put on in the first place.
"Sam!" My friend Heather greeted. Heather was the typical girly popular cheerleader type that you'd expect to shove a tomboy geek like me into a locker rather than go shopping with one, yet we've been best friends since we met in kindergarten.
Not that she doesn't bully me in other ways, always jokingly asking when I'll get that sex change. Which is really fucked up, just because I'm a tomboy, would rather go by my shorter "boyish" nickname and wear guy's clothes doesn't mean I'm unhappy being a girl.
"Hey, Heather. Ready to get some dresses?" I asked, unready to watch my friend try on twelve million dresses while I get her to choose just one.
After what seemed like a montage from a cheesy rom-com, me and Heather grabbed a bite to eat at the food court. She got a small salad while I bought a whole Styrofoam box of Chinese food, having missed breakfast and now I was starving.
"That's a lot of food, Sam." Heather judgementally noted glancing at my food. "So what?" I asked taking a bite of a piece of spicy garlic chicken with my chopsticks. "We're going by ThinkGeek after this, right?" I asked.
"Urgh, Sam you know that nerdy shit bores me, right?" Heather groaned. "So does your girly dress shit." I shot back.
"Hey, is that your boyfriend?" A somewhat chubby dark haired girl asked approaching our table and stopping our argument. Did.... did she mean me?
"Boyfriend? No. I'm-" I started to explain. "My brother. He's my brother." Heather lied with a glint of malicious intent in her eyes. "He's adopted."
"Oh, well he's really cool if you don't mind me saying so. I just thought I'd get to know him." The girl said somewhat stumbling over her words. "I can give you his number. He would, but he's super awkward and shy." Heather said, continuing this lie and giving the girl my number as I just sat there dumbstruck.
