Frowning, he tears off a sheet of paper and hands it and his pencil to the clerk. She looks at the writing implement curiously, but seems to understand its purpose.

Shiloh clears his throat, and speaks.

“First, understand that this is the baseline, what one can and should expect form any oni. Naturally I cannot account for individual talent or ability, but hopefully this gives adventurers a better ability to prepare.”

Holly nods her head. “Right.”

“Firstly, one should know that Oni can cast darkness and invisibility at will. Note that invisibility need not be cast on themselves, meaning that a single oni may not be as solitary as one thinks, and these two spells alone make it incredibly adept at ambushing others.”

She nods, writing quickly. Shiloh suspects that she had been trained as a scribe prior to being given her current job. She may in fact fulfill a role greater than just a simple clerk for the guild.

“Typically they can cast the following spells once a day. Charm person, cone of cold, gaseous form and sleep. Note that most of the oni’s spells except cone of cold are suited best for ambush tactics, and as such for damage dealing it would have to rely primarily on its strength and size. Cone of cold is an area of effect attack, so parties should remain spread out, covering one another’s flanks to avoid suddenly being frozen by an invisible foe.”

Holly frowns. “There are many adventurers with natural darkvision. Would that help them handle the darkness spell?”

“No. Magical darkness obscures even natural darkvision, but some warlocks of a sufficiently high level, uh, by which I mean suitably accomplished and skilled, have the ability to see through magical darkness, and some can even see invisible creatures. Ask around the guild, see if you find anyone with those capabilities and always consider calling them if there is a particularly strong Oni you need to deal with. Some Drow can cast detect magic as a cantrip, though these are rare, but adventurers being exceptional individuals one may be in your guild. Such a person could easily pick out a magically invisible creature if they know what they are looking for, and tell if one of their allies has been charmed.”

Shiloh and Holly continue their discussion for an hour, the clerk asking for clarification, detail and suggestions while Shiloh provides what insight he can. As the conversation comes to a close he hears the jingle of coins as Holly drops a fistful of gold pieces on the counter.

“That is 10 gold pieces.”

Shiloh blinks owlishly. “Seriously?”

“Yes.” Holly laughs at the boy’s dumbfounded expression. “The information you gave me is very valuable. In fact, you can consider that something of a down payment. The guild will want to discuss this information, but I am sure they will be sending along the rest of your payment once they sort everything out.”

“So, you wanted to become an adventurer? Name and place of residence?” “Uh…Shiloh Rivers, and I don’t really have a permanent home…”

“That is perfectly alright. Very normal.” She smiles as she writes it down. “We will have a badge for you tomorrow. Come in at around noon and I can give it to you. You can start taking quests as soon as you have it.”

“Thank you! Here! One gold!”

Holly shakes her head, blushing. “Oh, don’t worry, you paid plenty.” She makes a show of licking her lips and winks. “With how detailed this information is and what it can do for people I don’t think people will mind much.”

Shiloh smiles, and in a moment of sheer manic exuberance he leans over the table and pulls Holly in for a kiss. Her eyes widen, but she leans into him, wrapping her arms around his neck and returning it with fervor before pulling back. “Now now, we already had plenty of fun. I have work to do.” She pauses, biting her lip. “But maybe tomorrow.”

The two part ways soon after, Shiloh with a bit of a skip in his step as he walks out into the town. It is still only the afternoon and the sun won’t set for another few hours. His stomach growls. He hadn’t eaten all day, and what an active day it was. Perhaps it was time to return to the inn for some food.
