Chapter 29
by
Kalion
Can you offer Lord Minos that guaranty, or do you leave yourself some wiggle room to even more concessions from the United Army?
Yes, with conditions
"I give you my word, Lord Minos, that no one of Kalion nor my Oath-brother's cavalry will attack your Alliance." Minos smiles as he hears what he is hoping for, but you do not let him off the hook entirely. "Not without a clear warning of at least two full days, and only if you'll allow my forces to occupy the slums, and you allow other civilians displaced from their homes by your forces to take shelter in this area." You see his face drop a little at the condition and you point out one key advantage for the United Armies. "These are the poorest sections of Athenapolis, my friend, there is little if any gold to be had in these slums, and it will make supplying the rest of the city easier for you and your Lord Marshal." Lord Minos nods slowly, still clearly not convinced so you throw in your best card.
"I know that ceding any of the captured territory will piss off your mercenaries, and anger a good number of your officers too for that matter." You continue persuasively, "I've seen those greasy slavers congregating around your camps waiting to take their cut of each and every sale." You have seen too many of them, too often people forget that no matter who wins this war it is the **** Guild that profits. "It will mean fewer slaves, and less money in their pockets, but in exchange..." you pause until he looks at you with a raised eyebrow, "...I'll have my Oath-Brothers escort the refuges that have been already evacuated to safer lands." Minos lets out a deep sigh and the tension leaves his shoulders. "There will be no more horsemen to upset Lord Marshal Raxius, just me and my paltry honor guard." Minos is not fooled by your downplaying one of the deadliest forces in all the known lands, but all the same he seems pleased by your offer if slightly suspicious.
"That might be possible, my friend, but why do I have a feeling that's not all you want?" You laugh easily, this man knows you so well.
"Yes, my friend, I require two other conditions. The first is easy; to have Lord Raxius to sign the treaty in the Temple of Ares, and the second one is to have Heliopolis, Polares and perhaps Apollopol too, to grant me the right to take over Poseidonpolis to prevent a future war like this one." He looks shocked. "If you could do that, I'll send a message with the crown princes of Coreli and Biessoi diverting the thirteen flights of Drakes that I summoned from Kalion, to turn towards the city of Poseidon instead of coming here."
While he thinks it over. You go over the numbers in your head. Seven-hundred fast-moving horsemen with forty Riders to clear sky and prevent any advanced warning. They could sweep into the city and overrun its stunned army before the King of Poseidonapolis even knew they were coming. What will make this work, you decide with a grim smile, is the people of Poseidonpolis themselves who are near revolution. Even if somehow news of the attack reaches the city and the gates are closed, the angry citizens of the city might let your men in to end the downward spiral of their once great City-by-the-Sea.
The danger of course, is the other Hellenic City-states becoming aroused by your perceived aggression and turning on your and your people. But with Heliopolis and Polares refusing to condemn your actions it seems unlikely that the smaller cities would find the will and resources to attack you. The benefits of taking the city with its harbor and fleet of ships make it worth the risk.

Those ships will allow you to ship fresh supplies to feed the people of Athenapolis for the time needed to allow you to train and equip the best Athenian civilians and turn them into militias to shift the balance of power in Athenapolis. Those armed groups with their own leaders and advised by officers of Kalion are the key to allowing the neglected poor of Athenapolis to defend themselves.
"I can't agree to that on my own, your Majesty." Lord Minos says after a long pause, "It will require discussions with many different people, but if you will grant me leave, I will present your offer to the Lord Marshal and High Priestess of Heliopolis to start."
