Establishing supply lines
The next day, Cortes addresses the expedition. "Although it pains me as a man of action to deal in such bookish manners, it is a necessity to secure our foothold here in this strange new land. As such, I am looking for volunteers to stay here and protect our gains." The crowd of soldiers breaks into a general groan is disapproval. Few of the men are likely to want to end their journey so early, especially considering the success that has been had so far. Still, you feel that yesterday's close brush with death has left more than a few willing to avoid such risks in the future. "Now now" Cortes says, trying to placate the crowd, "if we are to succeed we need to make sure we don't lose every inch of ground after we gain it." It probably won't be necessary for you to stay, but if you did you would likely be the highest ranking man in the area. A bit modest compared to the dreams of treasure that led you here in the first place, but there are worse fates.
"I will be in my tent for the rest of the day. If you are willing to stay, see me there" he says and leaves the men at ease. Well, you need to make a decision.
