Chapter 22 by GateKeeper_A GateKeeper_A

What's next?

Try to ease their worries.

"But I want to make it clear that I am not my Uncle."

You can see the cautious looks on both girls' faces, "I like this house, and while the decision is not final, I'm pretty sure I will be staying," You pause, Eve's eyes flickering between you and her sister in uncertainty. You don't continue until Anna finally looks up, meeting your gaze.

"Since I have no idea what to do with the two of you, I would like it if the two of you just continued to do whatever it is you do around here while I figure things out," For some reason, that last part seems to rattle both of the girls more than anything else you have said so far, "Maybe we can talk about things and see if we can't find a way to make this work for all of us."

After a brief pause, and no indication that either girl are going to say anything, you ask, "What do the two of you do around here anyway?"

You see Anna take a deep breath, her tone guarded as she begins to speak, "We are responsible for the house, the grounds, and primarily to ensure our master is happy."

"Cooking, cleaning, serving meals, that kind of thing?" You venture.

Anna's eyes seem to ponder the space before her, "Eve tends to the grounds, mostly just mowing the lawn and watering plants, and she helps a little bit around the house, usually in the kitchen. I clean the house, prepare the meals, and remain ready to serve you personally at any time you need me."

You ponder her phrasing for a second before replying, "Unless either of you have objections, well keep doing that for the time being. If I feel like we should change something, I'll let you know."

Both girls become guarded, but nod in near perfect unison.

"Since we'll be living here together, it would probably be best if we got to know one another a little bit," Both of the girls give you uncomprehending looks, "Let me start."

"I'm currently unemployed, but mostly I've just worked fast food and factory jobs, little bit of writing too," Anna seems to perk up slightly when you mention writing, "My savings reached a point where I was going to have to ask my parents if I could move back in until I got on my feet again when I received the notification about my Uncle passing. Took me a week to scrounge up the money to drive across the country to sign the paperwork and now I'm here," You shrug, not sure what else to add, "I don't have a girlfriend or any pets, I'm an only child, and I don't call my parents as often as I probably should," After a few seconds of consideration, you continue, "I like playing video games, and I enjoy writing, even if I'm not real good at it yet."

Having run out of things to add, you gesture at the girls to take a turn.

You can see Anna composing herself, as if thinking carefully about what to say, but Eve beats her to it, "I don't have as much practice as my sister, but I try to do what I can around the house. My sister is the only family I have, or at least I think she is."

That's interesting. I wonder if she really does have family and she just doesn't remember them, or if she really doesn't have any other family.

"Our last master liked my sister best, and ignored me most of the time. He had nine slaves when he died. My sister is my best friend, I tried to make friends with one of master's slaves that he kept locked in his room most of the time. She was really sad and her voice was a little raspy from all the screaming he made her do, when he found me in his room talking to her, he made me watch as he hurt her," Eve's expression starts to fall, becoming terribly sad, "Anna says it was acid that he was pouring on her and that he liked it when she screamed. She's the only one he made cry more than my sister."

Fearing the answer, you can't help but ask, "What happened to her?"

"A man, an oriental man with a long brown coat and a hat came right after our last master died. He scared me a little. He gathered up all of the slaves except for us. He told us to care for the house until our new master arrived, then he left with the other slaves and a few other things," Her voice is small when she adds, "I hope she's ok."

For once, Anna is making no move to restrain her sister from talking.

"Anna and me sometimes sit up at night and talk to each other, about some of the happy things that have happened to us, like the night she snuck into the kitchen and brought me a slice of leftover cake for my birthday, or sometimes she'll steal a book from the library and we'll read it together. But she likes reading a lot more than me," Eve continues, seeming to go on forever now that she's started, "My favorite color is purple. Oh, and she always takes back the books she takes from the library, so please don't punish her for it!"

You can't help but smile a little at that.

"Sometimes we play in the pool if our chores do not keep us too busy, or in the evenings we'll sometimes play checkers, but we're missing one of the red checkers, so Anna lets me play black to make it more fair. Our last master used to make me take pills sometimes, or make my sister rub creams on my body. My sister said that he wanted to keep me looking little forever, I'm actually eighteen. He also gave my sister pills that made her taller and her chest bigger."

Eighteen? I'd have pegged her at twelve!

Anna finally raises her hand to silence her sister, color creeping into her cheeks, "I think he gets the idea," She lightly chastise Eve.

Looking at you, her tone is formal, "As my sister mentioned, she is the only family I have, or at least that I remember well," I notice that she does not elaborate further on her family, and seemed to be trying to change the subject from whatever pills and creams her sister was talking about, "My sister is very important to me, and I will do anything you ask without complaint if you promise not to harm her."

"I have no reason to hurt either of you," You say dismissively.

Taking a deep breath, Anna continues, "I like to read, and I enjoy cooking and cleaning the mansion."

You wait for several seconds, expecting her to say more, but she does not, "Thank you both for telling me a little about yourselves."

Pausing, you stifle a yawn, "I know its not real late yet, but a lot has happened today, and I'm tired. I think I'm going to call it a day. We can talk more tomorrow."
