Chapter 41 by throbbin
Do things ever work out that way for you?
For a few days
You and your sisters move out, skirting the village and proceeding deeper into the Blauwalt forest. Since you aren't carrying goods or managing carts or wagons you're sure to make good time. Having traveled this way a few times yourself you know that this part of the forest, near to the ocean, is less wild and dangerous than the deeper regions. For at least a day or two there shouldn't be any people or animals to trouble you. After that... well after that you're going to be wishing you were traveling with a nice, heavily protected caravan.
All through the journey Yulia is busy asking questions. It's not surprising that the daughter of a bard is inquisitive, but you're still surprised by the number and variety of questions she asks. Something about her just puts you and the others at ease and you find yourself talking about things you've rarely shared with anyone. Her questions range over every imaginable subject. The Burning Rose, your training, your childhood, Glenda's upbringing and the elves, the city and family Anya grew up in, spells and blessings, and of course she asks Xallia all about the daemon realms and everything in them. You expect her to start going a little hoarse considering how many questions she's asking.
At night you bed down in the woods, out of sight of the road. Due to that late start you weren't able to reach the next caravan stop along the road. Your 'camp' isn't very comfortable, but it would be very hard for a pursuing daemon to find. Two of you guard while the other three sleep, then the other three guard while the first two sleep. Come morning Xallia reminds you all that it's very important to keep feeding the little darlings she's planted in your belly - and she too could use more sustenance than any bread or cheese can provide. So you start a little late that day and progress is slowed due to wobbly knees.
When you get to the caravan stop in the morning of the second day you find evidence of small fires. They're too small for a caravan, so the most likely reason would be bandits. There are other possibilities, but as just you, Yulia and arguably Xallia are armed bandits are your first concern. You decide that come the next opportunity you need to get some weapons for Anya and Glenda. They'll be of only some use against daemons, but will be highly effective against bandits or wildlife.
The second night finds you closer to a caravan stop, but once again you choose to sleep in the woods, out of sight of the road. Xallia tells you it's unlikely that hunter daemons or the like would have come this far so quickly, but there's no reason not to take precautions. Once again Xallia pleads for a morning orgy and once again she gets her way. You resign yourself to the fact that so long as you're traveling with a succubus you'll be having sex every morning at the least. The loss of speed is annoying, but the warm feelings in your belly and the growing sensitivity of your nipples make it clear that soon enough you'll need sex as much as Xallia does.
On the third day you catch sight of another village shortly before dark. This one is far more secure than the last - it has tall wooden walls, sturdy gates and towers with well laid out firing slits. The forest is cleared for acres in all directions, though that is the only way a village this deep in the woods can produce enough food for its inhabitants. You remember this village, Lewruck, from your last time through here. The previous mayor was a little paranoid and plowed much of the town's taxes into the walls. The people grumbled and complained about how they could have had more wells, a larger inn and so forth. That complaining stopped years ago when a pack of rabid bears attacked the village.
You lead the others into a copse of trees before the cleared farmland, the last spot you're likely to be able to plan things before being seen. You explain the need for weapons and, if possible, armor. Xallia laughs and tells you armor might be a poor investment unless it can be adjusted as easily as her clothes were. You'd be angry at her except that she pats your belly so softly and lovingly that you know it was just a joke.
You then make clear that given the town's defenses all they need is a warning from sisters of the Burning Rose. You can go in, sell the dresses and buy supplies, weapons and plainer clothes, tell the mayor about the daemon threat and be ready to leave come morning.
The plan seems solid, but when you tell your companions you get gasps and wide eyed looks in response. Glenda clutches her elven dress tightly, Anya does the same with her red dress and Yulia the same with her blue dress. You can understand Yulia's reaction, but sisters aren't supposed to be very attached to material possesions. Xallia suggests that another 'festival' is in order anyway. Not only does she need the energy, but it will protect this village just as it did the last.
Can you convince them, or is a new plan needed?
