Coax Julie into telling you the whole story.

"Julie?" you hear from the other bed. It's Cara, having a moment of lucidity. "Are you there, honeymuffin?"

Julie blushes pink at Cara's endearment.

"Julie?" Cara says again, more urgently.

You wrap your hand around the hand of Julie's good arm and give her an encouraging squeeze and nod.

"I'm here, Cara," Julie says. "It's okay."

"I'm sorry," Cara says. "Do you still love me?"

Julie's ears are bright pink. You can practically feel the heat from her cheeks.

"Julie? Julie?" Cara asks.

"Yes, Cara, I love you," Julie says. "Rest, sweetheart. Rest now."

"I was just dreaming of you," Cara says.

"Go to sleep," Julie says. "Go to sleep, sweetheart."

Cara settles down. You hold Julie's hand, giving what you hope is an encouraging squeeze.

"Tell me, Julie," you say. "About you and Cara."
