An Argument

The two of you shut the door behind you and rest against the lockers a few doors down.

"We've gotta get out of here," says Jessica.

"What?" you ask. "We're running away?"

She nods. "It's too dangerous here, we should get out while we can."

Even only knowing her for such a short time, you know this isn't like her. "But what about the other students in here?" you argue.

"What about them?" she asks, eyes nervous. "Besides, they're the ones starting this shit in the first place!"

"That's not true! There's someone behind all of this."

"Someone?" she asks, narrowing her eyes.

"Yeah, she's gotta be somewhere in here..."

"She? Are you saying you know who's doing all this?"

You start to speak but stop. You know who's doing this. Right? You should. But nothing's coming to you. You can't remember. You start to sweat. You should know this, but you don't, like the things you'd learned in school except more important, more precious, more personal this time-

"Mel? Are you okay? Do you know what's going on here?"

How did it come to this, how did you stop being who you were before and enter whatever new world you're in? You can't remember, hands against the side of your head, all that comes to mind is a feeling, a feeling of falling. You remember being with Jessica as the ground crumbles around you, the two of you clutching each other as you fall through the earth-

No! you scream through your mind, clenching your eyes tight. You can't lose yourself now. You clear your mind and focus on who you are and it starts to come back to you. Your sister. Your stepsister did this to you, put you into this new life and started playing with the world. You have to stop her.

"Mel!" says Jess, grabbing your arm which was tight against your head. "What's wrong?"

You look up at her and start to calm down. You drop your arms to your side. "So you really want to leave?"

Jess nods. "It's too dangerous in here. There's no telling what could happen if we stay."

"But you're the only person who can stop this! You're immune to it-"

"And you're not!" she yells. There's silence for a second.

"Jessica," you start, but you're cut off.

"Look, everything that happens here gets you as much as anyone else. And if something happens to you here that I can't save you from..." She looks down for a second, then back at you. "Hey, let's get out of here. Let's leave this crazy place until we can figure this out. Okay?" She offers you her hand.
