Undecided

"I'm still undecided right now, I guess," you say.

"You could have your choice of major, though. With your grades, I bet people would do anything to get you," she says, looking down at her wrist and pausing. After a moment she looks up and asks, "why don't you tell your big sister what's wrong?"

You had never thought to do it before, but it might be good to confide in someone. "Mom and Dad kept pushing me through high school to get good grades. Never any free time, never any time for friends or relationships, not even time for fun, it seemed like. Once I got into a good school, they just kind of dropped off. Seems like they just wanted to check a box so they could tell their friends that their kid got into the best school around. Now that I am here I have no idea what I want to do with my life or who I want to be."

"You had everything, though, you had all their attention," she says looking confused.

"I always envied you, sis, you could do whatever you wanted. I just had to do what Mom and Dad wanted."

"Hey, if you could change your whole life tomorrow, would you do it?" she asks slowly.

You don't hesitate. "I have no idea what I want with this life, so sure." You yawn.

"Goodnight bro," she says, seeming distracted.

"Goodnight sis," you say. You walk off to your bed, feeling oddly drained of energy.
