To attack!

Horus winks at me.
"Two Romans against four barbarians? Sounds equal."
We draw our swords and, running out of the bushes, rush yelling at the plunderers. Two of the mother's tormentors have their skull broken before realizing what was happening to them. The third one tries to flee, but the woman, fighting like a cat, immobilizes him long enough for me to slay him.
At the same moment, Horus charges the spearman, but he has underestimated his adversary's speed: the spear transfixes his throat. Furious, I run at the barbarian and, before he can extract his weapon from my companion's body, I make his head roll on the ground.
It's too late for Horus. I untie the boy, who hurries to his mother. Both hug each other fiercely, soon joined by Aleka.
"You have been very brave, my darling," says her mother to her. "You saved us all."
They think afterwards to thank me and express their regrets for Horus' death. The farmer woman, after having put a rough tunic on to replace the dress her rapists have shred, makes introductions: she is called Verania, and her son Torix. I convince them that, other barbarians being likely to come, the best they have to do is to take refuge in Tarraco, till the Roman army has disposed of the invaders.
While the women pack their scarce things, Torix and I draw the five dead away from the house. We lump some stones on Horus' body and say a short prayer; I hope to come back later for a more formal funeral. Torix is shocked to see me then do the same thing for the four barbarians.
"You care for these bastards? They have killed your friend, and they have raped my mother and sister under my eyes! They would have killed us too!"
"They are men nevertheless, and they are dead," I answer briefly. We then join the women who have freed their goats and hens, hoping to find some of them again when they will come back. It is time for the little family to set forth.
