You quickly move your bishop to provide cover for your killing move. The sudden gasp of the crowd and look of relief that floods Scarlett’s face tells you immediately that you’ve made a mistake.
She leans over and sweeps her castle to your back row.
“Check,” she beams.
Shit. Oh shit shit shit. Your king is unprotected on the backrow and trapped by pawns. This is a disaster. You feel your face falling.
“I think tonight the queen is going to be dishing out the spanking, not taking it,” Scarlett winks at you. Her early nervousness seems to have left her completely. “And the prince will be the one going to bed with a very sore bottom.”
“One lucky move,” You snap.
Your hand is shaking when you pick up your king and move it to the one safe spot on the board. Maybe she won’t realise that –
Scarlett leans forward and moves her knight with a triumphant flourish. “Check – and MATE!”
The crowd cheer and your head sinks into your hands.
