Chapter 8 by madmage
Do you take the easy path?
The hard way
You weren’t going to get very far by taking the easy path, you decided. You were going to take only the best. Now whimpy priestesses. You resolve to find a party immediately.
It doesn’t take long before you are successful in your goal. You hover above the trees, looking down at a party led by the knight you defeated just yesterday. She wasn’t accompanying a group of inexperienced heroes this time. In addition to the heavily armored knight, there was a wizard. Wizards balanced themselves between powerful offensive spells and potent healing magics.. An elven archer brought up the rear, and as soon as you see those pointy ears peeking from the hood of his cloak you duck closer to the tree line. His eyesight was better than a human’s and you were willing to bet he was a better shot than the last archer you faced. Fortunately you could see that instead of watching for threats his eyes kept drifting to the fourth member of the party. A barbarian woman, clad in revealing leather, walked ahead of him hips swaying. While your eyes lingered appreciatively on her flat tummy, they didn’t miss the massive sword she had balanced in one shoulder, or the smaller pair of axes that hung low on each hip. Hit first, hit hard was the unofficial motto of the barbarian class.
“Dammit, Ebril keep your eyes on the forest, not Mirath’s ass. “ The knight snapped, glancing over her shoulder. “I don’t want to be taken by surprise.”
“It’s not like we’re going to run into anything dangerous out here,” the elf shot back, “It’s a well lit forest. Low level only.”
“And yet in this well lit forest, something has captured my sister,” Huh, you guess you could see the resemblance between the wizard and the fucktoy you left in the tower. “Her condition is unknown and what her imprisonment entail is uncertain. There are a number of nefarious things a monster could do to a captured hero. Which is why we must hurry.”
“As long as I get to have fun.” Mirath purred, tossing her thick mane of hair. “Cities get so boring, so many rules. Keep your nipples covered, don’t masturbate in the middle of the street. I’m always glad to find something to do.” Sounds like your kind of woman.”
“Focus!” The knight snapped. She’s quite the killjoy, you think. “We need to find a lead.”
A lead. You think you can provide one of those.
You had to be careful not to be too obvious. A scorch mark here and there to mark the path you wanted them to take. It worked rather well if you do say so yourself. They easily, if cautiously, followed the little clues you left. Leading them to a landmark known as the Living Bridge, the only crossing for a massive, fast flowing river You waited until they were in the middle of the bridge before launching your attack.
“Look out!” the knight cried as your javelin arched through the air and buried itself in the bridge the Heated Edge blackening the wood. The party all turn to look at you standing at deliberate distance from the end of the bridge, “You missed!” The elf called out.
“I wasn’t aiming for you!” You called back as the bridge woke with a roar. The Living Bridge was just that, living. A massive plant monster that had settled in the river, gods know how long ago and decided to stay put. It hated fire damage, and the worst place to be when it woke up was on it. Wood Golems surged out of the structure. The wizard easily blasted them away, but more rose to take their place. The Golems were spawnlings, physical manifestations of the bridges HP, which it regenerated at a obscene rate as it sat in the river. They gave precisely zero XP when killed. Which meant no relief for the heroes as the Golems surrounded them.
You took to the air to observe the battle. The wizard cast spell after spell, blowing golems to pieces, with no sign of running out of MP. You think he must have some high level equipment to pull that off. In contrast, the lady knight was deliberate in her actions, doing her best to stay between the wizard and the golems deflecting blows with her shield and armor. The elf was a true archer, never once drawing a melee weapon despite the close combat. Instead he used precision strikes to drop his opponents. The barbarian was a whirlwind of destruction, darting into the mass of golems and cutting them down with lightning sweps of her great sword.
But however great the combat ability, the Wood Golems would just keep coming. And if they relised that they should be thinking about getting off the bridge soon. It looks like the knight was the first to realize that. “Errol! Clear the bridge!” The wizard begins chanting, preparing a powerful spell to clear the way. You had planned on knocking one of the party into the water while they were distracted by the golems, and know looked like the perfect time.
Which one do you target?
