"Hi Felicity" her mum greeted her as she was welcomed into the small circle of conversation, "we wondered where you were, are you having a lovely time?"
"I just went outside for some fresh air" she told the small gathering, her mum, dad and who she assumed must be the Smith-Weston's, an elderly couple, clearly loaded judging by the jewellery on show. As the small talk continued, she was convinced that Mrs Smith-Weston was looking at her dress strangely, and she begun to worry that some stain was showing, but thankfully nothing was being said.
The talk continued, and she smiled trying to look interested as they discussed business, although that was better than the alternative, her mum talking about her maybe, or asking what those strange stains on her new dress might be.
She kept glancing around, looking for him, and once or twice thought she saw him in the distance, but as people moved around, she could never quite see for sure. In her hand the card he had given her still held tightly, worried she would drop it and never be able to find him again. She wanted to get away, go look for him, but her mum kept talking and trying to include her, and she felt it would be rude to leave now, so instead she stayed there, listening to their conversation.
At last her dad announced it was late and time to be making a move. Farewells were said, and she was thankful as she gathered her coat and bag from the cloakroom, joining them outside as they walked to their car.
"So did you enjoy the evening Felicity?" her dad asked as he opened the back door for her, helping her into the car, her long dress making it awkward for her.
"Oh yes, it was certainly not what I expected" she said smiling, squeezing the card she still held tight in her hand all the drive home.
