Chapter 37 by wixxy wixxy

How does tomorrow go?

Good, but with something... unexpected.

It's the first coffee break of the day. The material covered so far has been a very general introduction to the career and paths within the discipline, and while it has been interesting your unusual circumstance of having the job waiting for you has meant you didn't need to listen all that carefully. The main thing that has drawn your attention this morning, accompanied by a wave of discomfort, is that you noticed your ex-girlfriend sitting in the far corner. Carly stands out a mile away with her intense red hair and unprofessional appearance - and let's be honest her knockout body. The two of you are the only women in the class of nine, and by far the youngest people in the room. You found yourself panicking, worried that she has noticed you. Things were very, very bad when you last spoke (almost... a year ago? As with most things before the change you find it hard to remember specifics.) You had been sleeping around and got busted with Carly's friend Alison at one of Alex's parties. The next day had been emotional, with Carly's fiery temper erupting into catty ****, and finally she stomped off and that was that. Today, you are looking back at your male self's actions with disdain, and feel some sympathy with the redhead bombshell that you used to date, but while you are different person now you feel the shame and embarrassment of responsibility.

As you sip a can of soda, you try to make yourself as unnoticeable as possible while the boring other students mill around discussing their career plans. Unfortunately Carly shakes off the attention of the instructor and makes a beeline straight for you. Panic sets in and you are about to die of embarrassment, expecting the slap as her hand opens, but instead find it thrust towards you, waiting.

"Hi sister. I'm Carly."

"Uh, Summer." You gingerly take the hand and give it a brief shake.

"Summer. Nice to meet you." She seems taller than you remember - in part due to the killer heels she is wearing, but it begins to dawn on you that, obviously, it's you who is much shorter. And then you start to realize that you look and are completely different. Why would she know who you are? To her you are a nervous-looking girl in a room full of dull and lecherous men, and knowing Carly she's not going to leave someone in that situation by themselves. As she does her thing, chatting away to put you at ease, the panic recedes and you flush with awkward giggles. It's still a supremely weird situation for you, but compared to the fears you had it's a walk in the park. When the coffee break is over, she moves her bag and notebooks over to a desk next to yours and as you settle back into class your poor little brain is working overtime trying to make sense of everything.

Jesus, what a trip. It's clear that Carly is determined to be your friend, which would ordinarily be a nice thing - after all you liked her enough back in the day to go out with her - but if she's going to remain in the dark about your transformation you are going to have to manage her very, very carefully. She can't meet Alex, or Gwen, or your parents. She can't know where you live - not exactly, anyway - and you're going to have to be super careful about what you say. Fuck this is going to be a nightmare.

After class: try to ditch Carly or just roll with it?
