Chapter 12

What about Adam?
He woke up eventually
I watch Alice play with her new pet for an hour, chuckling and just watching her enjoy having her magic. That's about when Adam comes out in just his pants and shoes.
He stares openly at the impossible beast under his partner, “Umm. What? You made a giant cat for her to play with?”
“No… she made it,” I purse the lips on this body, “see the text over her head?”
“Detective Alice Silver… she's a Spheres Arcanist?” He blinks.
“Yes. The summon has been out long enough that I'm pretty sure it's going to stay for a full day.” I shrug, “And you're an Incanter, so you can work your own magic as well.”
“So who wrote my sheet…” he considers, “...and what's on it?”
“The first I don't know…” I consider, “...but given that your partner knew her summoned creature from her childhood and is ecstatic to have the giant magic cat, you'll probably find that whatever you get is in line with your personality. For the other… I can see your sheet if I focus a bit, so I can answer that one with a bit of time.”
“But I can't even see your class…” the male detective rubs his chin, “...which suggests you're special - some kind of game master or admin.”
“And you both got magic shortly after draining my milk tanks… and they didn't start aching until I'd spent some time with you.”
“And you can't just pump it out. Oof, that's rough,” Adam cringes, “any idea why Alice threw me at you? She's never been particularly interested in sharing before, even when the lady she was dating was bi.”
“Don't forget that you were practically compelled to drink,” I let out a slow breath, “quick gut check, how do you feel about me sleeping around?”
“The more the merrier.” He pauses, “Okay, where'd that come from?”
“I'm learning as I go. How do you feel about more gut reaction questions?” I rub my body's chin, “I'm afraid they'll need to be a bit personal.”
“I'm thinking we should figure out what kind of mind-whammy you're accidentally putting out, yes…” he takes a deep breath, “...fire away.”
“Are you in a committed relationship?” I begin.
“I was,” he cringes. “Wonderful lady, she's going to be so pissed off when I confess next time I see her. She's probably going to hit me a few times, stab me, and then break up with me. And I deserve it.”
“Do you want to go with me again, even with that?”
“Oh yeah, don't regret it at all.”
“Do you still love her?”
“Absolutely.”
I nod, “How would you feel if another guy slept with her?”
“Betrayed,” he answers easily.
“If Alice did?” I keep going.
“More so.” Instant answer.
“If I did?” The kicker….
“Oh, would you?” He perks up and turns to me, then pauses, “Huh.”
“Yeah. Apparently I have some kind of ‘fuck me!’ aura.” I suppose that would explain the two dozen-ish drinks an hour at the bar.
“Also an anti-jealousy aura,” the male detective turns back to watch his partner play on her new cat. “Compersion, I think it's called? Hmm… how'd you get dosed?”
“I literally can't say,” I shake my head.
“What about writing?” He tilts his head, not even challenging what I said.
I shrug, get put my phone, and try drafting a text message, finding I can't hit the keys with the intent, “Looks like not.”
“All right… so no clues about who is trying to bring magic into the world,” the man runs his tongue over his teeth within his mouth, “at least it doesn't seem malicious, for the most part.”
Um… “what?”
“I'm a detective,” the man rolls his eyes, “let's assume things are going more or less as desired for whoever kicked this off.”
I nod, and Adam continues, “So… you give out magic. You're **** to give it out, even, more or less.”
“It certainly hurts if I don't,” I agree.
“And you have an ‘aura’ or whatever that encourages others to aid you in that, be it coming to you for magic or bringing others in,” the man breathes out slowly, “mind control, evil stuff.”
“It certainly lends itself to some really dark things,” I confirm.
“But it's just greasing the wheels, here. It's not like you're murdering anyone, or are **** to tell deep secrets, or whatever… it's just spinning up the mechanism for you to give away magic… and the more you give out the faster it's likely to go,” Adam tilts his head, “with how you're set up, there's hardly any other way things could go. You'd pretty much have to run away from civilization entirely to avoid it.”
“...and when…” ugh, “...set this up…” stupid block, “...had to have known that,” which means the Eldritch Entity isn't a sore loser: It set me up by throwing the bet to get my cooperation.
“That must really suck,” the detective cringes, “not being able to say what you want.”
“Yeah. I want to kill…” I growl.
“Yeah. That aside, though…” Alice's partner considers, and nods his head towards Alice, “Look at her. Does she seem cursed to you?”
I look at Alice, riding around on a magic cat the size of a horse, laughing and playing, occasionally tossing a blast of magic into her yard just for fun. “No, she doesn't. Quite the opposite, in fact.”
“Exactly,” Adam nods, “her benefactor could have maybe found a way that's not so rough on you…” he breathes slowly, “...but whatever entity set this up isn't trying to hurt anyone.”
Ugh, “I am going to need to think about that.”
“Yeah… heavy stuff.” He pauses, “Could you do me a favor?”
“Probably, I shrug. “What do you need?”
“I'd like you to copy out my sheet for me.”
Adam's build?
